Shropshire Senior Merit – 1 Day to Go – Preview

The Shropshire Senior Merit is here and it promises to be a big day for our County President Mick Jones. It has been 12 years since we had a Merit by one of our County Presidents, Alan Mayhew in 2011, 10 years after our first, Mike Hinton. It will be a proud day for Mick and I’m sure it will also be a great day on the green too.

We have four of our Hall of Famers taking part, Pete Farmer plays Hanwood’s Ash Wellings, Rich Goddard plays Michael Cooper of Sir John Bayley, Tony Rhodes take on fellow captain Nick Davies from Meole Brace and Spencer Clarke plays Burway’s Kiah Roberts. In addition to Pete, Rich and Tony, our first three League Merit winners, there is Paul Williams, who won the fourth one, playing team mate and favourite Callum Wraight, and Josh Bradburn, who takes on Mark Shore from Hanwood. 1998 League Averages winner Keith Wall plays Will Tarrell from Meole Brace, 2009 Averages winner Rich Lawson takes on Burway’s captain Jesse James, 2014 winner Scott Harries has our League Secretary Martin Gaut of St Georges first game, and 2021 Averages winner Jamie King plays Wrockwardine Wood team mate Steve Roberts. Ian Gaut won the Most Consecutive Wins in 2010, and has Andy Marshall from Wem USC first game, while Castlefields captain Adie Rowe has Craig Wilson from Meole. Ben Hinton has had a good start to the season at Chester Road, and plays Phil King, while Bylet’s Simon Rhodes has another player from outside our league, Harry Church. Chester Road skipper Gary Beff has Will Tyler of Meole Brace, and Wrockwardine Wood’s Scott Moseley is against Ian MacDonald from Chester Road.

Good luck to all 32 players!

There will be live scoring here. There will be also live videos of at least the Quarter Finals onwards on the Facebook page here.

Blue Badge Holders will be able to park at the bowling club, please make sure you have your blue badge ready to show on entry.

We have also been informed that there will be a road closure on Sunday 25th June between 10 am – 11am in the High street for the New Mayor’s civic service and parade. Diversions will be signposted, but it would be best if those attending can avoid the high street during the morning. Access via other routes such as along station road. off the A518, then Granville Avenue will be unaffected. Please allow extra time for your journey on the day.
