Inter-Area Competition Report

The East area won the first ever Inter-Area Competition at the Bowring after defeating the South area by 43 chalks with all 8 winners.

The final started on the old green and Clay Flattley was impressive on a round peg to win 8 against Matt Ealey. Martin Gaut was 19-10 up on Nick Wyer before Nick got back to 15. South captain Cheryl Caswell was 13-10 and 16-14 ahead of Steve Broome before Steve ran out, and Pete Farmer from 14-12 down on Adam Dovey won 16 on the longer marks. So after 4 blocks off, the East led by 29.

On the new green, and the East never looked in any danger of losing that lead. Alex Jones was awesome on a round peg against Kiah Roberts after trailing 8-2 and 13-11, allowing Kiah to score one more in the best game of the night. Ayden Smith had an early 9-4 lead against Reece Farr up to the crown and back, before Reece led 14-12. It was nip and tuck then until Ayden won 19. Tom Roden was 12-6 up on Ben Allen before Ben got back to 12 across. It was then close until Tom won 20. Jamie King was 11-6 down on Dave East, before Jamie got in and played a 3/4 mark to level at 12 across. Dave then went 15-12 up before Jamie only conceded two more. Overall the East team won by 43.

In the Semi Final on the new green, the South edged out the West by 6 chalks despite just 3 winners. Reece Farr raced 14-3 up on Jon Palmer before a comeback from Jon got him to back to 17-12 down, however Reece then ran out. Rich Lawson took an early 8-5 lead but found himself 16-12 down against Nick Wyer, howeer only then conceded two more. Chris Jones went 12-7 up on Matt Ealey, before Matt himself went 18-14 ahead. It then went to 20 across and Chris got the one he needed. Colin Smith and Kiah Roberts had an excellent game, with no more than 4 separating them through the game. It was Colin who got the win, running from 17-16 down. After four games, the South led by one.

Ben Allen was always ahead of Ian Metcalfe, going 13-6 up and despite Ian getting back to trail 16-14 down, Ben ran out. Dave East had an early deficit of 10-6, but then went 14-10 up on Wayne Rogers. Wayne couldn’t quite get back at him as Dave won 15. Simon Lane was 13-6 and then 18-12 up on Cheryl Caswell, before Cheryl got back to lead 20-18 in 2s, however Simon then got the 3 he needed. Doug Edwards from 12-8 down on Adam Dovey only conceded 2 more, but the South had done enough, winning by 6 overall.

In the other Semi Final on the old green, it was the East who came out by 16 shots despite the winners being shared. Jamie King came off winning 5 against Aileen Coleman, and Pete Farmer edged out Ian Howell 17 in a very good contest after Ian had led 11-5. But the North kept in it with Robin Bennett winning 13 against Alex Jones, virtually running out from 12-11 down, and Carl Hinton winning 16 versus Ayden Smith, running out from 17-16 up. This meant a 7 shot lead for the East side.

Martin Lloyd then reduced this to 3 chalks with a 17 win over Martin Gaut in a good game with no more than 4 points separating the two players. But Steve Broome came off winning 10 against Ian Jones, having a good run from 9-8 up. The win was sealed after Clay Flattley won 17 after being 16-8 up on Gary Whitehall. Dave Ellison beat Tom Roden 19 after coming back from 17-13 down.
