17 years ago the first “Top 16” Competition was run at Shifnal featuring the top players from the 14 league clubs. It ran for a further 2 years before stopping due to a lack of sponsorship.

The new “Top16” competition sponsored by ACM Properties, held at Shifnal Bowling Club, on Sunday 30th September, was won by Colin Beaman (Meole Brace) who defeated Derek Wright (Wem USC) 21-16. The format of the competition meant that all 14 clubs were represented together with the League Merit winner and the player with the Most consecutive wins.
The final saw Colin with a high quality start lead 7-2 and although Derel recovered to be only 12-10 down, Colin stretched his lead to 18-12 on his favoured mark. With the score at 20-16, Derek lay on for two but Colin played up, struck the jack towards his back bowl and score the final chalk to clinch his win.
In the semis, Beaman managed to see off Spencer Clarke (Sir John Bayley) 18 after leading all the way. The other semi saw a nip and tuck game between Nigel Bound and Derek Wright, with Wright making a two on the last end to win 21-20.
