Bayley & Ifton win big, Meole win away, Burway earn fab five, Hanwood & Wrockties win well
League leaders Sir John Bayley had a great 13-3 win at Hanmer in week 7 of the Taylor Support Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Bayley vice-captain Tom Roden said “Hanmer’s a tough place to go, and after losing there last year, our aim was for any aggregate win. So, we’re really pleased to come away with a 13-3 win. Alex Jones was back to his best, and Ayden Smith and Owen Evans dug in well to both win from around 10 shots down.” Stuart Rutter and Scott Harries were best winners 9, while for the home side it was Robin Bennett with his 9 win. Ifton won by the same score at Horsehay to keep their good form going. Skipper Dickie Jones said it was a “good win considering we’ve never seen the green before. We supported each other well on the side and it made a difference. Owen Jackson was involved in the game of the night just losing 20 against Olly Harris who played really well. Joe Langford played well to be our best winner 6.” Spencer Collins was best winner 10 for the home side. Meole Brace was the third team to win away from home, 10-6 at the Bylet. Captain Nick Davies said “last year we got 6 winners at Bylet but narrowly lost the agg. So this year in our current form, we were hoping for a better result. It was nip and tuck for most of the match, with 3 close games going in favour of Bylet and 1 for us. But 2 good cards from Will Tarrell and Phil Lyttle (best winners 10) on the front kept us in the game and it was left to Doug Edwards at number 12 to bring home the victory. This away win has capped off a fine week for the team coming straight after our win over Wrock Wood in the County Cup. But we’ve now got three extremely tough games to come – two at home against Ifton and SJB and away at Castlefields.” Best winner for the Bylet was Rich Taylor 10.
Wrockwardine Wood had a great 11-3 win over local rivals St Georges. Captain Rob Jones said it was “a really good contest with some top quality bowling in display from both sides, From 7-1 we are disappointed not to have won by more, but at the same time St. Georges could also have won a few more points.” Best winner for Wrockwardine was Sally King 9 with Ian Gaut best for the visitors 12. Hanwood also won 11-3 against Wem USC for their best result of the season so far. Captain Simon Lane said “the lads have been playing well all season but we’ve dipped out on a few close games in the first few matches of the season, resulting in us missing out on a few vital points. But we know that we have been playing well, thankfully this week we got over the line in the close games with the lads on the side really helping with their support. We managed to secure 23 points at home this week against 2 good teams in Burway and Wem putting us back in the middle of the pack, hopefully this will now help us kick on and we can keep pushing on up the table.” Darren Wellings continued his good form to be best winner 8 as Curtis Metcalfe was for Wem 15. Burway will be very happy with their 5 winners at Castlefields. Skipper Adam Dovey said “we knew going there it was going to be a hard game against one of the best teams around, but we know with our team we can still pick up games wherever we play. Over the moon with 5 games and proud of the team. Good crack with the Castlefields boys and credit to Wayne getting the green in top nick.” The returning Paul Williams was best winner with Lee Wilding 21-12, while Adie Rowe continued his form from the Alan Mayhew Trophy Final being best winner 4 for the Fields. Highley beat Adderley 10-4 with Dave East and Jacob Ash best winners 8 while Barry Hughes was best winner 10 for the visitors.
Sir John Bayley are four ahead of Wrockwardine Wood who are another 6 ahead of Castlefields. Bylet and Horsehay are level on points with Wem USC three ahead of the pair. Callum Wraight, Liam Stevens, Dan Taylor and Rich Lawson are all on 7 wins.
