Bylet & Castlefields earn big wins, Ifton keep up form, Meole edged out
Bylet and Castlefields earned big wins in week 20 of the Taylor Support Shropshire Premier Bowling League as both defeated their main rivals 11-3. The Bylet beat Horsehay, with captain Cheryl Caswell saying “it was a great result for us and I think fully deserved on the night, in a game that was certainly played with lots of enthusiasm. We know there is still a long way to go and expect more twists and turns to come at the bottom but wish Horsehay all the best in what has been a tough season for both sides in many respects.” Best winner was Joe Dicken 3, with Michael Cooper best for the visitors 13. Castlefields defeated Sir John Bayley to close the gap to 3 points at the top. Best winner was Ash Wellings 6 while Reece Farr was best 14. Wrockwardine Wood also closed the gap with a 9-5 win over Burway, best winner being Scott Moseley 7 and Duncan Pressley 3 for the away side. St Georges also had a good win over Adderley 12-2. Pete Farmer was best winner 4 with away captain Gary Whitehall best winner 15 for them. Ifton had a good away win 12-4 at Hanmer to keep 4th place. Skipper Dickie Jones says it was “a great team performance to finally get a win there. Owen Jackson played well in the front to win 21-11. We had three winners in the middle to lead 6-2 and when Nick Jones came off winning 9 (to be best winner) it sealed the valuable 4 points for the aggregate. It now sets us up hopefully for a strong finish to the season.” Best winner for Hanmer was Nathan Lacey 8.
Hanwood narrowly beat Meole Brace 8-6 by just one chalk. Meole captain Nick Davies said “what a game! Hanwood got off to a good start on a pacey green with three winners on the front – Glyn Wellings exceptional against Chris Jones as was Dave Redge against Darren. However, as the game progressed we gained further wins with the highlight being Andy Wigginton rolling back the years with a 21-3 victory (to be best winner). This left us with a slight chance of an aggregate win and as Julian Cooke last man on raced into a 16-3 lead – it looked like we could get a shock away win. However, it was not to be as his opponent got himself back into the game to get the required chalks to give Hanwood a narrow one point aggregate win! A good night for bowls all round with skilful bowling, good natured banter and plenty of support around the green – which in my view is how it should be.” Dave Burton was best winner for the home side 3. Highley had a good 11-3 win over Wem USC. Stand in skipper Andy James says “Wem bowled well in the first four as it finished 2 across. Gareth Davies was exceptional (to be best winner 9). Highley won the middle 4 although 3 of the games could have gone either way. Highley won 3 out of the last 4 games with Andy James winning to 8 (to be best winner). A good team performance and Wem bowled the green well.”
Sir John Bayley are 3 ahead of Castlefields, who are 9 ahead of Wrockwardine Wood. Horsehay are 14 behidn the Bylet and another 16 adrift of Adderley. Callum Wraight is two wins ahead of Reece Farr.
