Meole in form ahead of Fields visit, Bayley face biggest test yet, Hanwood host Ifton
Meole Brace are in good form ahead of a big local test in Castlefields in week 15 of the Taylor Support Shropshire Premier Bowling League. They got 6 winners at Adderley on Wednesday, losing by just 3 chalks, following up a win at Horsehay last Friday. Captain Chris Jones says “another close but not quite game on Wednesday with us just dipping out on the agg by 3, but nonetheless a good 6 away from home.” Best winner for them was Russell Pugh 8, while Jack Hazeldine was best for the home side 4. He adds “tonight’s game will be a big challenge on a toasty night against a quality side from start to finish.” The Fields have had mixed results at Meole in the past, but know it’s a big opportunity to overtake league leaders Sir John Bayley who are at 3rd placed Wrockwardine Wood. The Bayley come in on a 21 match unbeaten run, and know they will be hard pressed to continue that run here. Joint skipper Paul Evans says “this week we face WW twice in two days in the league and then the cup semi final and we look forward to what we expect to be two tough games. We start on Friday by heading to WW in the league which is one of the toughest places to go and we expect with the weather we have had the green will be sharp making it very tough but we will go there with a view of getting a decent result as the aim will be to try and remain on top of the table at an important time of the season.” Wrockwardine are coming into the game on the back of two bad results and know they will need to hammer the Bayley to have any chance of reclaiming the title. Skipper Liam Stevens says it is “two really challenging days ahead on what I’m sure are going to be on two pretty naughty surfaces. Bayley have so many players who play our green well, they are always a huge threat – the last few years we have been excellent against them at home but if we drop those levels by a fraction, I have no doubt they will make the most of it – especially with their current form, it is incredible. The league is over for us and whatever tomorrow’s result, we will reset quickly for the big one on Saturday – those are the games we play bowls for. Very much looking forward to both games against a top, top side.”
Hanwood take on an in form Ifton side in what could be a long night at the Cock Inn. Captain Simon Lane says “Ifton are always a tough team to play against as they have some of the best players in the league in their team, they are a top bunch of lads and we look forward to welcoming them to Hanwood on Friday on which could be a very long night!” Ifton have scored 70 points in their last 6 games and are now only 8 behind Wrockwardine Wood in 3rd. Burway are in 5th still and will look for a good win over the Bylet, who are now in 12th despite some good results this season. Highley are in 6th and host Wem USC looking to keep their place in the top half, but Wem come off two good wins in their last two games. Adderley will look for a good win over bottom placed Horsehay to move them away from trouble at the bottom, while Horsehay know they have to start picking up some good results to catch to Hanmer above them. Hanmer travel to St Georges who are only two places above them and have had some indifferent results this season.
