Bayley face tough opener, Woore start Premier life, South Shropshire Derby
Sir John Bayley face a tough opener in week 1 of the Taylor Support Shropshire Premier Bowling League. They travel to Ifton as they look to reclaim their title, but know they did win there last season. Ifton captain Dickie Jones is aware of that, so knows it is “a tough game against the only team to have beat us at home in the last two seasons. We are pretty much at full strength so hopefully we can get the season off to a winning start.” League holders Castlefields host Burway, with Burway having 6 players get some practice in the Audlem Special Events Team Alan Mayhew Trophy on Wednesday, although they did all lose. Wrockwardine Wood will be looking for a good start as they travel to Wem USC, but Wem have strengthened and know a win against a team looking for the title would be a real statement. Woore start life in the league with a tough opener against Hanmer, a team that will have some green knowledge. Skipper Dan Hand says “the first game in the Premier League for us here at Woore. We have been hoping to get here for the past two seasons and now we are finally here. We are all looking forward to the challenge ahead of us and we will be looking to cause the odd upset along the way in our quest to establish ourselves at this level. Tonight’s opponents Hanmer we know very well and won’t be taking very lightly.” Bylet host Highley in a South Shropshire derby knowing a win would be massive given their losses over the Winter. Highley though know a win there, like last season, is needed if they are to finish top half again like last season. Adderley host Hanwood, with Hanwood another team having had 6 of their team practice on their opponent’s green in the Mayhew and looking to capitalise. Adderley know a win against a team who finished 5th last season would be a good start to what could be a tough season. St Georges take on Meole Brace with both teams wanting to push on from disappointing seasons last year and move back into the top half of the league.
