Congratulations to SPBL Bowlers

It was a great weekend for the Flowfit Shropshire Premier League at National and County level this weekend. Firstly on Saturday at the All England Championships at Florence in Stoke Andy Moss of Chester Road had a fantastic run to the semi finals. He beat Phil Maddox of Wales first round 4, then Trevor Quayle of Isle of Man 11. Next was Graham Gardiner of Warwick and Worcester 14 in the last 16, and then John Brown of Lancashire by the same score in the Quarter Finals. But unfortunately his run came to an end against eventual winner Tom Vickers from Cheshire, who beat him 14 and then beat Warwick and Worcester’s Gareth Herbert 17 in the final. Andy has enjoyed a great season so far too in the league, being 8th in the League Averages with 13 wins from 17 matches.

2nd placed in the League Averages Pete Farmer, from Newport, dipped out 17 against Warwick and Worcester’s Ryan Prosser in the 1st round, as did Bowring’s Rob Roden who was edged out 19 against Mick Brown from Staffordshire. Meole Brace’s Darren Wellings won his first game against Isle of Man’s David Bradford 14 before losing to Andy Saunders from Warwick and Worcester 10 next game.

Then on Sunday in the Shropshire Junior Merit two players who have played in the league this season took home both trophies. Aaron King of Bowring won the main Junior Merit, beating Jack Butler of playoff hopefuls Hanmer 16 in the final, while Jamie Fletcher who has played 5 games in the league this season for Sir John Bayley, won the Peter Ashton Consolation trophy beating Will Stokes 14 in the final. Aaron has won 5 games this season, and after his run to the quarter finals of the Senior Merit where he lost to eventual winner Rob Roden, is one of the most promising bowlers in the league.

This could also be the first time, although definitely in the history of the league, that one club has held the winners of the County Senior Merit, Junior Merit and Handicap in the same season. Bowring’s Rob Roden, Aaron and Rich Lawson have won this title this season.
