Top two match each other again, Wem and Bowring produce stunning results
It was an interesting night in week 18 of the Flowfit Shropshire Premier Bowling League as Wem USC stunned Wrockwardine Wood 9-5 and Bowring stuffed Sir John Bayley 11-3 at home. John Bushill’s 21-2 win was key to the aggregate for Wem as they ended Wrockwardine’s unbeaten home record with Captain Mike Dulson adding an MVP 21-11 win. For the home side Stuart Rutter was best winner 14 and John Clarke got MVP for winning 18. Bowring produced another great result against the Bayley, making captain Rich Lawson “delighted with the win. I thought the pace of the green suited us really well, and getting off to a good start helped. Dave Brown bowling extremely well to win 18 gave us a 4-0 lead and we built on that. Will Plant was excellent in beating George Williams (12 to win MVP) and Mark Taylor and Dave Lloyd (the former being best winner 6 and the latter gaining MVP for winning 7) were both outstanding in their games to put the gloss on a great win against a very good side.” Spencer Clarke was best winner for the Bayley winning 6.
The top two matched each other but it was contrasting nights for the two sides. Newport found themselves 3-1 down at Archibald Worthington with Archie captain John Digby leading by example winning 9 for MVP and best winner. Sam Millward replied for Newport with an 18 MVP win. Down at Hadley, Meole Brace found themselves 3-1 up with Ade Rowe winning 5 for best win and MVP and Will Tarrell winning 20 from 19-13 down, but Rob Burroughs replied 9 for the hosts to keep them in the aggregate. But Meole only took one winner in the middle, Andy Wigginton 19 as Hadley fought back with 2 14s and an 11 winner to go 11 up on chalks. Newport though took 3 out of the 4 with Kevin Keary leading the way with a 21-3 win to put them 20 chalks up on aggregate. Newport then shared the back four, Jamie King just dipping out 19, to win 8-6. Meole looked to have the win when Gary Neal won 9, Nigel Bound 13 and Colin Beaman 17, but last man for Hadley Nick Mullinder played superbly over a 20m straight mark to win 8 and draw the aggregate. Hadley vice-captain Rob Burroughs was “very happy with the bouncebackability shown by the team on and off the green to produce a good result against a good team. Nick Mullinder was awesome last on to win us the game when it looked like we might waste a good position at 4 all after eight. So was Adrian Smith who is our best player at the moment, and Justin Pegram on his debut for us was unlucky after a good comeback from Will Tarrell.”
Bylet gained 3 points on Archibald Worthington as they beat Chester Road 9-5. Last year’s overall MVP winner Matt Ealey recreated that form when winning 6 whilst Andy Moss was best winner and MVP too for the visitors winning 8. Castlefields produced the best home result of the night beating Ifton 12-2 in what was described by home skipper Keith Walton as an “excellent home performance against a top team.” Callum Wraight was best winner as he won 6 and Glyn Herbert got MVP for winning 9. Craig Griffiths was best winner for the visitors winning 11 with Geraint Williams the other winner 18. Burway and St Georges had a close game with the visitors edging it by 10 shots and 7 winners to 5. Mark Rogers was the best winner 8 for the hosts in the first four with Ben Allen also winning 19 for MVP in the first four, which saw Burway lead 4-0. The middle saw away captain Tony Rhodes win 8 and Glyn Picknell 20 for MVP as St Georges took all four to lead on aggregate. But Burway won 3 out of the last four to seal the win, Russ Davies winning 10 and Jolyon Partridge 13.
The top sees 5 points between Newport and Meole Brace, with 8 separating Archibald Worthington and Bylet at the bottom. The Bayley have been drawn into the pack now after their 3 at Bowring, with 15 points separating 3rd from 10th.
Nicky Jones lost for the first time in 14 matches to match Rich Lawson’s 13 consecutive wins this season. This meant Peter Farmer is now top of the averages, by 8 shots to Glyn Picknell.
