Newport Champions, Archie earn vital win at bottom

Newport were crowned champions of the 2015 Flowfit Shropshire Premier League in the penultimate week of the season. They beat Sir John Bayley 11-3 and with Meole Brace losing 9-5 at home to Ifton they are now have an unassailable 18 point lead going into the final game. Newport were always comfortable against the Bayley with 5 single figure winners led by vice-captain Dave Rhodes 3. Alex Jones responded with a best win of 12 for the visitors, while the game of the night was between Jamie King of the home side and Chris Ward for the away, with Jamie winning 19 but both got MVP. Over at Meole away captain Dickie Jones described it as “our best away performance of the season knowing we needed a good result.” The returning David “Rocky” Jones inspired the visitors to move only 5 points behind their hosts in the table as he won 14 and Craig Griffiths best winner 11. But it was Ian Metcalf who won MVP for winning 18 and bringing home the aggregate by his winning margin of 3. This was despite the hosts’ Colin Beaman winning 4 and MVP in the first four.

Archibald Worthington produced the home result of the night by beating St Georges 11-3 to move themselves 7 clear of bottom placed Bylet as they got 2 winners at Castlefields. Despite three single figure winners for St Georges, Mike Wainwright and Tony Rhodes 7 and Pete Gaut 9, the latter earning MVP, Archie took the other 9 games to win the chalks by just 7, and were thankful for 2 20 and 19 wins. Rob Adams’ 6 win for the hosts was crucial earning him MVP. Over at Castlefields the hosts didn’t suffer from being short of at least 4 players from the Isle of the Man as they took a comfortable victory. They had two single figure winners, Andy Judson 3 and Kevin Walker 6, the latter earning MVP. The two winners for Bylet were Rob Steventon 12 and Rob Renke 13, the former earning MVP.

Wrockwardine Wood moved into 4th and 3 points behind Ifton in 3rd with a 10-4 home win over Bowring. Tom Langford was best winner 5 and Steve Roberts won his 4th straight MVP winning 13. For the visitors Glyn Hayward was best winner 15 and Rob Roden MVP 20. Hadley USC beat Burway 10-4 with one of their best home performances of the season, led by vice-captain Rob Burroughs 4 earning him MVP. 3 20 victories helped the home side but there was a 20 win for the visitors as well as a best win of 10 by Wayne Rogers and an MVP win of 18 for Russell Davies. Wem USC overtook Burway with a 10-4 home win over Chester Road, who will be ruing three 20 losers, with Colin Smith earning MVP for being one of them. Best winner was John Bushill 5 for the hosts and Chris Nicholson and Carl Hinton 11 for the visitors, the latter earning MVP.

The top two of the League Averages both lost, but Rich Lawson still remains on top with 20 wins and a plus of 145 on aggregate. Rob Burroughs is 2nd with 20 wins and plus 119 and Glyn Picknell is 3rd with 20 wins and a plus of 101. There are 8 players though who could still win the averages but Rich is the only one who has it in his own hands. Rob Burroughs has moved one clear in the MVPs with 8 now, ahead of Paul Williams and Steve Roberts on 7.
