Week 7 Review

St Georges roar to the top, Fields gain super six, Burway bash Newport

St Georges produced a stunning 10-4 away win at the Bylet in week 7 of the Flowfit Shropshire Premier Bowling League to roar top of the league. The Dragons captain Tony Rhodes commented on a “great team performance with my 4 high profile losers also playing really well and just missing out so things could have been better. Their green is tough at the moment and not easy to play but we found a way with some great wins throughout and all 4 at the back was a bonus. Paul Beer continues to impress with another excellent win last night.” Best win and MVP for the away side was Pete Grimston 5 and for the home side was Kevin Brazier 13. Previous leaders Ifton drop to 2nd place as they only beat Castlefields 8-6 at home. For the home side best winner was Nick Hughes 5 but MVP went to Leighton Roberts for winning 19, while Mike Beer was the best for the away side winning 8 with Keith Walton getting MVP for winning 17. Adam Jones, part of the captaincy line up for the Fields, was “pleased with the performance by all the team last night especially off the green as it was great support from the lads. We went to Ifton looking for 3 so to get 6 against a strong Ifton side was very pleasing.”

Meole Brace are three behind leaders St Georges in 3rd place after beating Wrockwardine Wood 11-3. Colin Beaman led the way at number 1 winning 7 to be best winner and MVP, while Stuart Rutter was best winner and MVP for the visitors winning 13. Sir John Bayley are two points behind Meole after beating visitors Wem USC 10-4. Paul Evans was against best winner at home winning 6 but MVP went to Chris Ward for winning 19, while Fred Bailey won 5 to be best winner and MVP for Wem. Wem have slipped to the bottom after Hadley USC beat Hanwood 9-5. Hadley captain Rob Burroughs was “happy with another home win but should have really been 12-2 with three close losers being up in their games. But credit to Hanwood, they battle hard and we have to be happy with a 9-5 win as they could have easily got a couple more winners. Dave Burton was immaculate for them being best winner 21-2 on this falling mark and fully deserving MVP, Ben Dixon played well for those 2! Phil Lyttle produced 6 stunning ends at the back to win 18 when it looked like it was going to be 10-4.” Hanwood captain Mark Shore said it was “a satisfactory result and a fair one. We could have scraped more and equally lost more so we will take that. Prior to the match I had told the lads not to underestimate Hadley which we didn’t and fellow joint captain Ash Wellings asked those lads that were down in games to battle for every point at that was in evidence with great comebacks from Glyn Wellings to run out from 20-16 and Phil Lyttle to win from 18-13 down. Also Ash himself rallied from 14-5 to only dip out 20. We also had a couple leads wiped out but on the whole a great away performance on a surface not to our liking. A big performance from Dave “The Dog” Burton to see off Ben Dixon 21-2 for us and some eye catching performances from Hadley’s Nick Wyer, Phil King and Rob Burroughs but the consistency and quality of John Potters display earned him a much deserved MVP. Special mention to for Ben Talbot making his premier league debut and battling to a much deserved win. The whole club is happy to see him back with the 1st team where he belongs. On now to a big derby match against Meole.”

Burway produced one of their 11-3 wins they got so many of last season against the Champions Newport. Kiah Roberts won 5 for the home side to be best winner with Mark Rogers MVP winning to 13. For the visitors Alan Davidson continued his good form winning 9 and MVP. Burway captain Chris Dovey commented on a “great performance from us, a good home victory. I thought that Alan Davidson bowled excellent and deserved MVP for them.” Chester Road beat Bowring 9-5 as they bounced back from their 1 last week at Hanwood. KP Jones led the way for the home side winning 10 and MVP while for the away side James Grimston won 10 to be their MVP.

St Georges are top of the table by 2 points to Ifton with Meole Brace a further point behind and Sir John Bayley two points behind them. Aaron King and Alex Jones have continued their unbeaten starts to the season while Stuart Rutter has gone clear on 4 MVPs at the top of the table.
