Week 19 Review

Bylet earn vital win, Chester Road earn fab five, Hanwood hammer Bayley

There were some interesting results in week 19 of the Flowfit Shropshire Premier Bowling League as we are still no closer to knowing who will win the league. At the bottom though it looks increasingly likely Hadley USC will finish bottom of the league as Bylet beat Meole Brace 10-4 to move 16 points clear. Rob Renke was best winner 10 for the home side with Chris Chamberlain MVP for his 12 win. Meole Brace, missing some players at a wedding, only lost by 19 shots with Will Tarrell best winner and MVP 10 helping reduce the aggregate. Chester Road earned a fab five at Newport after being 4-0 down. Captain Paul Fowles said it was “yet again a really good fighting performance from 4-0 behind. Chris Nicholson beat a 6 inch bowl to win while Paul Griffiths was outstanding (to earn MVP winning 15). Other results went our way a bit so very happy and we move onto another important game on Friday.” Martin Lloyd was best winner 12 with Phil Emery best winner and MVP for the Champions winning 7.

Sir John Bayley failed to take advantage of the top two’s losses and St Georges inactivity as they only scored 3 at Hanwood, only losing by 19 shots. Joint Hanwood captain Ash Wellings commented on a “really good win for us against of the best teams in the league man for man, We were 3-1 up off the first four with Alex Jones earing MVP for SJB beating Ben Talbot 9. Tony Hotchkiss beat Norman Harvey 16 despite a spirited fightback from Norman who was way down. Phil Lyttle played well to beat Scott Simpson 14 and myself and Paul Evans had a real battle coming off the green at 8.05 p.m. with me just managing to edge it 19. Bayley started the middle four on fire as Aaron Tapper and Steve Burroughs both went 17-5 and 17-3 up and got out 5 (to be best winner) and 10 respectively but we took the other two games. We then took all of the back four games against four really good players so we were delighted with the result. Dave Burton earning MVP with a superb performance in the corners (to win 7 to also be best winner) and last game on Nick Davies showed some real bottle to beat Ant Bracken 18 from 11-4 down. Very happy considering the green wasn’t running how we like it.” Castlefields took advantage of the top teams’ struggles to move within 7 points of the leaders with a 10-4 home win over Burway. Glyn Herbert led the way winning 5 to be best winner and MVP while Wayne Rogers won his 14th consecutive game being best winner 13 but Peter Griffiths took MVP for winning 15.

Wem USC bounced back spectacularly as they hammered Bowring 12-2, who will be ruing several close games going against them. But Wem captain Mike Dulson was delighted, saying that “with showers during the day Wem’s green was holding like it was against Chester Road two weeks earlier, where we lost 11-3. The only difference this weekend was we won all the close games. The Bowring players were in every game apart from two cards and will come away feeling hard done by with only getting two. This will give us a much needed boost after a recent dip in form.” George Williams was best winner 8 over his former club with Scott Thomas gaining MVP for his 18 win, while for the visitors Rob Roden won 12 and Josh Bradburn 16, the latter earning the MVP award. Ifton matched their best ever score at Wrockwardine Wood when they got 5 winners there, which pleased captain Dickie Jones. “Leighton Roberts played well in the front to be our only winner there (and MVP). In the middle all our 3 winners bowled well to win but we only managed one winner in the back. We would have liked one more but 5 was good as our record there has not been good.” Andrew Hughes was best winner for the visitors 8 while Steve Roberts and Stuart Rutter both were best winners 6 for the Wrockites, Steve gaining MVP.

So Chester Road are 5 clear of Meole Brace in 2nd and 7 ahead of Castlefields. At the bottom Hadley USC are 16 adrift of Bylet, with the two now meeting on Thursday 11th August in their rearranged game. Andy Moss is now two ahead at the top of the League Averages, although Alex Jones does have a game in hand on him. Wayne Rogers has won 14 consecutive games and Stuart Rutter still leads the MVP by one.
