Taylor Support Shropshire Premier Bowls League
The Flowfit Shropshire Premier Bowling League would like to congratulate St Georges on winning the Summit Garage Premier Bowls League title this season to banish the anguish of missing out in the final game last season. They finished two points clear of their rivals, with four teams being in with a shout at the start of the night. But St Georges’ 3 winners at Chadsmoor, captain Glyn Picknell, Tony Rhodes and Lewis Scott, was enough to win the league for the first time. Captain Glyn Picknell “People who don’t know bowls will think it’s strange the four teams vying for the title all lost but we all had away fixtures so it wasn’t that unusual. That said, I would not have said we were favourites going into the final game. Chadsmoor has always been something of a graveyard for us in the past. Winning the league is a fantastic achievement, for all our players. It is pretty much the pinnacle of Midlands Club Bowling.” It was a busy night off the green too in Cannock, “a few of our lads know players on the other teams, so there were plenty of calls going in. It was all very tense but by the final end we knew we had done enough to win it.” Glyn took time to pay tribute to former Skipper Alan Palin, who moved to Jersey at the end of last season. “The whole thing was Alan’s brainchild so for him not to be part of it when we’ve won seems strange.”
Castlefields survived their first season in the top division, finishing in 6th but just one point above having to face a playoff. Wrockwardine Wood finished 7th in Feeder A, while Hadley USC improved to finish in 4th place in feeder B. Sir John Bayley’s first season in the league saw them take 6th place in the second division.
