Hanmer earn first away win, Bayley batter Wem, Meole & Fields win away

Hanmer earned their first away win in Gameweek 11 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League as they won at neighbours Chester Road in a result that tightens up the bottom of the table. It was even more remarkable that they were 4-0 down to. Captain Dave Ellison explained “the first 4 games all went Chester Road’s way which left us a mountain to climb. But Jack Butler started the fight back and with Marcus Hughes winning to 8 along with Graham Faulkner (to be joint  best winner) it made it 5-3 to the Road after 8 blocks. We then proceeded to take 2 of the next 3 and this left our stalwart Alan Faulkner to stop Gary Beff getting 18 which he duly did to make it 6-6 and the agg by 4 . A great performance from Hanmer and any away win in this league is special and we can go into Friday’s game against Newport full of confidence.” Best winner for Chester Road was Steve Rogers 10.

There were two other away winners with the top two keeping the pace at the top with both winning away. Leaders Castlefields matched Sir John Bayley’s 10-4 win at Bylet the week before with Paul Williams their best winning 4. For the home side it kept them down the bottom with James Duce their best card 12. Meole Brace may have lost a point on them but will be very happy with winning at Wrockwardine Wood 9-5. A game of no single figure cards showed how tight the game was! Captain Pete Bound commented it “could have gone either way as individual players on both sides lost good leads All the scores reflect a tight match as no one got a drubbing. For us I thought the last two players on the green Mark Thomas and Doug Edwards handled the pressure well and got us home.” Best winner for Meole was Scott Moseley 13 while Dan Taylor was best for the home side 12.

Sir John Bayley managed to make up some ground with a 13-1 home win over Wem USC, only Craig Ashley’s 15 win stemmed the Bayley tide. Skipper Tom Roden said “13-1 was a brilliant result for us. It keeps the pressure on all the teams at the top and it was a good response after a disappointing County Cup performance on the Wednesday. Craig Ashley played brilliantly for Wem and also Neil Boxall who led Paul Reeves 14-3 at one point. Once Reever managed to get in though he was back to his usual high standards and won a very important point.” Gordon Hawkins was best winner 5 for the home side. Another 13-1 winner was Hanwood over the Bowring, which joint captain Mark Shore explained “it didn’t deserve to be a 13-1 they played the green well. Phil Jones was exceptional to be their only winner 15 while another one who came close was Dave Lloyd against myself, but from 17-16 down I managed to use my nous around the green and ran out. Another awesome home performance from the lads.” Best winner for Hanwood was Dave Burton 7. Newport were another big home winner winning 11-3 over Burway. Best winner was Chris Grocott 5 while Kiah Roberts won 9 away for the second week running to be best winner again.

Castlefields are still top by 5 points now to Sir John Bayley and Meole Brace, while Bylet are two points behind Chester Road at the bottom. Callum Wraight is now top of the averages by 3 chalks to Paul Reeves, and has clocked up 10 consecutive wins like his team mate Mike Beer. But with Mike on holiday now then Callum knows one more win will give him an outright lead.
