Castlefields showed grit and determination to remain on course for their first title in 7 years with a 9-5 home win over Bowring by just 3 chalks. Bowring could have easily claimed the whole of the first four, with Aaron King winning comfortably 9 and Phil Jones coming from 18-16 down to win 19. With Dave Lloyd leading 20-10 and John Cooke level in his game with Adie Rowe it looked like it could be a dream start for the Wellington side. But Rich Goddard from 20-10 down played some great stuff over at the middle but Dave looked to have won the match with a foot bowl at 20 across. However Rich flipped his peg to lick it and win his game. Adie Rowe was 19-18 down against John but played three good ends to get out and the Fields were relieved to be 2 across but down by 11 on shots.
Into the middle and Jamie Fletcher came back from 19-14 down against Mike Beer to actually lead 20-19 and lead an inch bowl on a straight peg. But Mike played it out and got out next end to win 20. Rich Lawson was a few down against Adam Jones before Adam played a great bowl to save game at 20-18 down but Rich got out next end. Ayden Smith and Paul Williams was a very close game to before Paul won 19, and with Steve Duckett beating Josh Bradburn 14 it meant the home side were 5-3 up but down by 3 on aggregate.
At the back and the Fields turned the screw on the game with Graham virtually running out from 12-10 up to win 12 on a round peg, and Callum was comfortable winning 8 to seal the aggregate for the league leaders. Rob Roden was always ahead in winning 10 and Reece Farr running out from 18-14 down to gain a great 5 in the end for the Bowring.
The win means that Castlefields are 9 clear ahead of their clash with the team directly below them, Sir John Bayley, on Friday. Bowring move up to 5th place and are two points off Hanwood in 4th.
Callum Wraight now leads the averages by 25 shots on aggregate with Mike Beer also on the same number of wins but in 4th place.
