Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our “new” League sponsors, FLOWFIT.  As you will remember, Simon Parsonage, Managing Director of FLOWFIT, sponsored the League in the late nineties and John Nash introduced FLOWFIT as the sponsor at the end of last year’s AGM. Simon has agreed to sponsor the League for a minimum of three years and I am delighted he has returned to sponsor our League.  When I met with Simon and his wife Sharon in February to receive the sponsor cheque of £1,500, we were keen to improve the stature of the League and Sharon agreed to “judge” an award during the season for the “Best Dressed” Team and She presented the award for 2013 to the Sir John Bayley club. There are exciting times ahead and we are very lucky to have FLOWFIT as a League sponsor, I recommend to all players to support our sponsor in any way they can.

In 2013, the league lost “Ford”, who resigned prior to the AGM having suffered a loss of players. Ford entered the league in 2002 having beaten Bylet in the 2001 playoffs at Donnington Wood and became the first club to win a “play-off” against a Premier League club.  Following the resignation of Ford, the League voted on Hadley USC rejoining the League following their playoff defeat against Burway.  The vote was approved and Hadley rejoined the league after resigning themselves in 1997.

Newport were to prove the team to beat again in 2013 but for most of the season Meole Brace proved to be the pacesetters.  They won 17 out of their first 18 games to lead by 26 points, although Newport had a game in hand. They then visited Newport and in a high quality match where the best card was only 21-12, Newport won 11-3 and then proceeded to catch and overhaul Meole Brace to win the league by 14 points. In third place were County Cup winners Sir John Bayley, narrowly ahead of three time winners Chester Road. In fifth were former winners St Georges and sixth were record champions Castlefields. Bylet proved to be the most improved team of the season, earning the £50 first prize.

At the bottom Archibald Worthington failed to recover from scoring only 8 points from their first four games. Despite an excellent second half from the Archie lads they got back to being only one point behind Ifton going into the final round of games. But Ifton got an excellent five at Castlefields, so Archibald Worthington propped up the table and had to play in the league playoffs.

Interest in joining the league continued to be strong with two teams applying to contest the 2013 play offs.  Hanwood and Hanmer, who each won two leagues. In a hotly contested pre-playoff at Bowring, which was even after the first four, Hanwood forged ahead, led by Mark Parsons’ 21-8 card, to lead by 12 after eight blocks, but Hanmer, led by experienced premier league player Mel Jenkins, fought back to win by 4. There then followed an investigation into the eligibility of one of Hanmer players, Paul Hallott and following the evidence being provided to the League Management Committee, a decision was made to rule “Paul” ineligible and award his game 21-0 to his opponent, resulting in Hanwood winning the match.

In the ”play off” final on an immaculate green at Hadley USC, prepared by John Breeze, Hanwood and Archie contested the closest ever playoff final in front of around 300 people. One chalk separated them after the first four, and then it was dead level after the middle four, but Dave Gourlay’s 21-5 card at number 12 proved to be the difference, getting Archibald Worthington over the line by 3 chalks. Another amazing evening of bowls and I hope that we can ensure that this year’s events can be put behind us and we continue to improve the stature of the League.

The Alan Mayhew Trophy went to Castlefields after they defeated the Bowring by 15 overall. Joint captain Mike Beer’s perfect 21-0 win in the first four earned him the Mike Hinton man of the match award and proved to be the difference.

On the individual front, Glyn Wellings won the John Coxill Trophy for the first time when he beat Jim Fletcher 21-14, in the final held at Prees.  Wayne Rogers, from league newcomers Burway, won 22 games to lift the Neville Edwards Trophy for the first time and Peter Farmer, Dale Rudrum and Colin Beamanrecorded 15 consecutive wins to take the Mick Jones Trophy. The Pairs competition was held at Bowring after the season had ended and was won by the former All  England champion Callum Wraight and former Olympic Classic winner Luke Jones from Castlefields,  beating brothers Ian and Pete Gaut from St Georges 21-17 in a close final.

The Premiership Pool A&B format continued as an 8-a-side competition and Newport beat Castlefields in the final of the Pool A shield.  Burway completed an excellent  first season by lifting the Pool B shield after defeating Ifton in the final at Archibald Worthington.
