Three Away Wins, Hanwood earn big home win, Bowring fightback

There were three away wins by the top three from last season in Gameweek 3 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. They all showed they mean business but it was Newport who won the biggest by winning 12-4 at Chester Road, a place where they traditionally don’t do well at. Stand in captain Dave Rhodes says “it was a great performance. We went 4-0 up with all the first four playing well, with Pete Cookson the best of them winning 9. Chester Road fought back hard in the middle to have 3 winners but we had 3 winners at the back, including Russ Pegram being 16-6 down and running out down an edge against Martin Lloyd, a terrific win. Steve Rogers played well full corners (to be best winner 3) and Paul Latham did too against Tom Langford.” Best winner for Newport was Dale Rudrum winning 6. Castlefields pulled off an eye catching 11-5 win at St Georges pleasing captain Alan Peach. “The team played really well on Friday. It was a great performance. Absolutely chuffed for the lads, the spirit amongst them is terrific. We take one game at a time, a solid start made by the lads.” Glyn Herbert and Mike Beer were the best cards both winning 7, while for the Dragons it was Pete Grimston and Nige Evans 12.

Sir John Bayley was the third team to win away, 11-5 at Bylet. Skipper Chris Worthington commented “it was another great team performance from 1-12, on and off the green again. With the new 4 points rule it was important to get an away win in quickly. We didn’t take a much improved Bylet side lightly and our order showed that and after a slow start 4-1 down, we took the next 5 games without reply to pretty much secure the agg, Kane Beaman the best of the night with a flawless display winning 21-6 was the difference. A very tough home game coming up in Hanwood will have us all focused again for Friday night.” Best winner for Bylet was captain Scott Harries 5. Hanwood bounced back from last week and got themselves ready for this Friday as they beat Ifton 12-2. Joint captain Mark Shore was “very happy with the result on Friday. Was looking for an 11-3 so 12-2 was a good return. Some good performances throughout the team. Darren Wellings played really well to beat Leighton Roberts first four. Special mention must go to Nathan Lacey on his debut he played without fear and took to a tricky paced green to defeat Ash Wellings.” Greg Smith was best for the home team 8, while the other winner for Ifton, Craig Griffiths, was best for them winning 5.

Bowring foughtback from 3-1 down against Wem USC to win 10-4 and save their blushes. They had the unusual situation of having one winner in the front but leading on aggregate, however, led by Reece Farr winning 4, they only had one more loser. Neil Boxall and Scott Thomas were best for the visitors 17. Meole Brace got their first win of the season but Hanmer will be happy with 6 winners there. Will Tarrell was best card for the Shrewsbury side winning 7 while Robin Bennett was best for the visitors 14. Wrockwardine Wood will be happy with 5 winners at Burway, but maybe will be ruing not getting more winners after being 4-4 after eight games off. Stuart Rutter was their winner in the back winning 8 and to be their best winner, while Duncan Pressley and Kiah Roberts were best for the Ludlow side winning 9.

Sir John Bayley lead by 3 points to Newport, while Ifton are two points adrift at the bottom from Meole Brace and Wem USC. Chris Dovey leads the averages and knows an 21-10 win will net him the first player of the month award.
