Top three all win away, Bowring batter Hanmer, Ifton & Bylet gain good away hauls

The top three of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League all won away in Gameweek 12. Hanwood gained the biggest win of the three, 12-4 at Meole Brace, making use of all the ex-Meole bowlers in the team as they gained their first away win of the season, pleasing joint captain Mark Shore. “Fantastic result for us last night. Always thought we could go close but the performance was brilliant by the lads. Craig Wilson fought back from 18-11 to beat Bill Tarrell which kick started us after Darren Wellings had put in a faultless display in the front four. Ash Wellings was in great form to win 7 in the middle (to be joint best winner with Darren)  as was Colin Beaman in the back. A fine win which was sandwiched between our 6 home 6 away free press cup victory over the Greville Arms.” Scott Moseley was best winner for the home side 9. Newport won 11-5 at Wem USC which featured Pete Farmer winning his 26th Consecutive game, a joint record, and this having had one of the toughest draws on there, Derek Wright, their leading player last season. Dave Rhodes was best winner though, winning 9. Chris Brettell was best for the home side 8, who saw their good start halted. Sir John Bayley will also be happy with their 10-6 win at Chester Road, winning by 9. They were thankful for Tom Roden and Chris Ward both winning 9 to help get them the aggregate, despite Andy Smith’s best win of 4 for the home side. Wrockwardine Wood leapfrogged Castlefields after beating them 9-5, despite Castlefields having an unfamiliar team out. Dale Downes was best winner for them 10, while Mike Beer did likewise by the same score for the Fields, who now find themselves 26 points behind the leaders.

Bowring battered Hanmer 12-2 to hopefully get their season going. Captain Rich Lawson commented on “a very pleasing home performance, the green had plenty of run in it and the result looks like it was a comfortable win but it was far from that. We got off to a great start winning all the first four. It looked like the middle was going to be shared but Reece Farr dug in and got two 2’s at the end to steal his game. It looked like Hanmer were going to take the back four 3-1 but again we did deep with Brian Jarvis coming back to win 19, and Roy Bradburn winning 20. Dave Lloyd was immaculate winning 21-1 against Dave Ellison (to be best winner), who himself bowled extremely well but without any luck. On another night they could have had 5 but I’m pleased with how we fought to win those close games and gain a good result.”  For the visitors it was Robin Bennett who was their best, 14. Ifton gained a great 6 up at St Georges, just like they did last season. They didn’t get close to the aggregate this time though, despite Nicky Jones’ best win of 10, as Dave King helped the Dragons to another poor home win with his 21-4. Bylet will also be very happy with their 5 at Burway as they continue their good form. Rob Steventon was their best winner 12, while Adam Dovey was the home side’s best winning 5 as their home struggles continue.

Newport are top by 11 points to Sir John Bayley, while Hanmer are 7 adrift of Chester Road at the bottom. Peter Farmer and Russ Pegram are still unbeaten from 12 games.
