Hanmer beat Meole Brace by 8 overall, winning by 23 at home and losing by 15 away.

Hanwood beat Horsehay by 30 overall, winning by 40 at home and losing by 10 away.

Burway had a walkover against Ifton

Castlefields beat Highley by 11 overall, winning by 27 at home and losing by 16 away.

Sir John Bayley beat Bylet by 79 overall, winning by 69 at home and 10 away.

Adderley beat Wrockwardine Wood by 18 overall, winning by 13 at home and 5 away.

Wem USC and St Georges had a bye

2nd Round – Wednesday 17th April

Hanwood beat Hanmer by 22, winning by 28 away and losing by 6 at home.

Castlefields beat Burway by 19 overall, winning by 26 at home and losing by 7 away.

Sir John Bayley beat Wem USC by 7 overall, winning by 14 at home and losing by 7 away.

St Georges beat Adderley by 29 overall, winning by 51 at home and losing by 22 away.

Semi Finals – Wednesday 1st May

Castlefields beat Hanwood by 41 overall, winning by 21 at home and 20 away.

Sir John Bayley beat St Georges by 75 overall, winning by 62 at home and 13 away.

Final – Saturday 11th May

Castlefields beat Sir John Bayley by 10 on Allscott Grass Green at 6.30 p.m.

Final:

Castlefields won the Audlem Special Events Team Alan Mayhew Trophy Final for a record 10th time with a comeback victory against Sir John Bayley to win by 10 overall. They were 7 up after four games off with Mike Beer best winner 12, but the Bayley had three winners in the middle to go 14 up, Scott Simpson winning 9 and Stu Rutter 10. However Josh Hale won 8 for the Fields and Adie Rowe, a late reserve for Callum Wraight who was unable to return from winning his competition at Woodplumpton (well done to Callum on his win), won 10 to earn himself the “Mark Burroughs” Player of the Match award and put Castlefields 10 up. Ash Wellings then won 20 in a cracking game with Chris Worthington, meaning Tom Roden had to run out from 10-9 up on Andrew Judson. Tom got to 15-9 up however Andrew got the one he needed and eventually got 20 to give Fields a win by 10.

Captain Steve Peach says “firstly we’d like to thank Allscott for providing the venue, it’s a superb venue that has all the attributes of becoming Shropshire’s number 1 venue. We are delighted to have won this competition for the 10th time against a very good Sir John Bayley side. Having gone 14 behind with two of the back four both going 9-0 behind & then having the late news that the games number 1, in some eyes, was not going to make it, it was looking bleak. But as always with any Castlefields side, we showed resilience and all of the battling qualities required to win. Special mention to Adie Rowe who stepped in for Callum, he was superb and after all the heartache he had last year with the captaincy, I think was very fitting for him to be man of the match.”

The individual games reports are below (Castlefields names are first):

1. Jon Palmer was 12-8 down on Paul Evans but then went 17-12 up and won 15.
2. Hayden Lewis was mainly a few ahead of Scott Harries till 15-11 up when Scott ran out.
3. Michael Beer was 5-1 down to Aaron Tapper but Michael went 15-7 up. Aaron got back to 16-12 down but Michael ran out.
4. Adam Jones went 13-9 down on Ayden Smith and then 17-12 adrift. He got back to 19 across but Ayden got the two he needed.
5. Tom Palmer was 8-3 down on Scott Simpson, and Scott extended this lead to win 9.
6. Gary Neal was only 7-5 down to Reece Farr, but then trailed 14-7. However he then led 16-14 but Reece got the block back and won 17.
7. Glyn Herbert, in for the unavailable Rich Goddard, was only 7-5 down to Stuart Rutter but then went 15-5 down and got 10.
8. Wayne Rogers raced 11-2 up on Spencer Clarke but Spencer got back to 15 across. Wayne though then ran out.
9. Josh Hale was 5-2 down on Owen Evans but from 7 across only conceded one more.
10. Ash Wellings went 8-0 down to Chris Worthington and had to play a great bowl to get in. He got back to 8-7 down but Chris went 14-8 up. He kept nibbling at Chris’ lead and wasn’t ahead till he won 21-20.
11. Adie Rowe was 8-1 up on Dan Taylor and then 11-2. He pushed again to go 19-6 up and won 10.
12. Andrew Judson was 9-0 down on Tom Roden but got back to be 9-8 down. Tom pushed again to go 18-10 up but Andrew came back to lead 20-18. Tom though then got out in singles.

Semi Finals:

A repeat of the 2022 and 2023 finals will take place after Castlefields and Sir John Bayley got through their Semi Finals in the Audlem Special Events Team Alan Mayhew Trophy. Castlefields got past Hanwood by 41, winning by 20 at home and 21 away. Castlefields report that it was a “good home performance on an evening where the weather played a part with torrential downpours. We battled well in the first 3 with Callum Wraight nearly running out from 7-7 playing some super stuff to win 8 (to be joint best winner) and Hayden Lewis battling back well to win against an impressive Mark Parsons. Going into the back 3 fast starts from Tom Palmer and Adam Jones meant we were in control with Adam winning 8 (to be joint best winner) and Tom also winning. A good away performance and conditions did us a favour with the rain starting right after the Hanwood lads stopped practicing. Mike Beer was very good to win 12. The rain got heavier to the point where there were puddles on the green and Rich Goddard (best winner 8) and Josh Hale took advantage to win, Josh doing so from 8-0 down. Rich Addison played well for Hanwood.” Best winner for Hanwood at home was Wayne Phillips 13 and away was Andy Jones 12.

The Bayley inflected a third Semi Final defeat on St Georges in as many years as they beat them by 75, 62 at home and 13 away. Vice-captain Tom Roden said “despite the awful weather, it was a great night for us. Both the home and away 6 have put in top performances. We’re really happy with the win and it lines up what should be another brilliant final against Castlefields.” Best winners at home were Alex Jones and Paul Evans 8, while away it was Scott Simpson 14. The Dragons’ best winner at home was Cody Everitt 15.

2nd Round:

Two Shrewsbury and two Telford teams are through to the Semi Finals of the Audlem Special Events Team Alan Mayhew Trophy. Hanwood got past Hanmer by 22 despite losing at home by 7, winning by 28 away. Alan Faulkner was Hanmer’s only winner at home 20, with Dave Payne best winner 12. At Hanwood, and captain Simon Lane was best winner 12 with Hanmer’s best being Mike Gilpin 14. They will meet Castlefields next after they got past Burway by 19. They won at home by 26, Rich Goddard best winner 9, with former Fields man Paul Williams best for the Ludlow side 19. On Burway they kept the damage down to 7, former Burway man Wayne Rogers best winner 13 and Harry Parsonage best for the home side 12.

St Georges got past Adderley by 29 shots after having a full sweep at home to win by 51, Pete Farmer the best of them 4. On Adderley and they kept it down to 22 despite Pete Grimston being their only winner 18. Home captain Gary Whitehall was best winner for Adderley 10. Sir John Bayley actually lost their game against Wem USC by 11 chalks, however, Wem played an unregistered player, so, under Match rule 4, the game was awarded to Sir John Bayley 21-0 (and a fine of £25) which means they won by 7 overall. Wem had won well at home but after the walkover it was only 7 shots with James Weaver best winner 7 as Scott Simpson only won for the Bayley 17. On the Bayley and Wem had kept the score down to just 14 as Sarah Weaver was best of two winners 10. Scott Harries was best for the League Champions 9.

The Semi Finals will take place on Wednesday 1st May with Castlefields playing Hanwood and St Georges taking on Sir John Bayley. A reminder a player has to have played one league game (in any league) to be able to play in the Semi Finals.

1st Round:

Adderley shock Wrockites, Hanmer and Fields edge home

Adderley shocked 2022 Champions Wrockwardine Wood after beating them by by 18 in the 1st round of the Audlem Special Events Team Alan Mayhew Trophy. Captain Gary Whitehall says it was “a good start in the cup for us, winning the first 6 games made it difficult for Wrockwardine to turn it around. Our best home performance would be our Phil Jones (best winner 9) and I believe Josh Cotton played very well for our opponents at Wrockwardine (best winner 9).” At Adderley Martin Williams was best winner for the Wrockites 6 to limit the damage to 13 there, but Tom Killen and Jamie Brookes both won 8 for Adderley to win by 5 at Wrockwardine Wood. Hanmer edged home past Meole Brace by 8, winning by 23 at home and losing by 15 away. Alan Faulkner was best winner at home 7 and Ieuan Pugh away 15. For Meole it was Aiden Hughes best winner 4 at home and Chris Jones 8 away.

Highley put up a lot more fight than last year after only being beat by Castlefields by 11 rather than the 100 last season! They won by 16 at home, with Jacob Ash best winner 9, and had two winners away led by Phil Chester winning 18. The Fields were thankful for Gary Neal winning 8 away, and Callum Wraight being best winner 10 at home to win by 27 there. Hanwood defeated Horsehay by 30 overall, winning by 40 at home with Wayne Phillips leading the way 21-9. Away and Horsehay won by just 10 with best winner being Richard Jones 12. Mark Shore’s 3 win was imperative to keep the damage down. The other game saw the holders Sir John Bayley get past Bylet by 79 overall, winning by 69 at home and 10 away. At home, Chris Worthington was best of a full house 21-2, and away Owen Evans was best 14. Rob Fuller was best winner at home winning 17 for the Islanders.
