Report of 2019 Season

After starting off on a sad note losing Bowring from the League Hanmer were welcomed back. The other addition for the 2019 season was Highley, who had defeated Hanmer in last year’s Play Off Final to gain their place. 2019 was another all-around successful season for the Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Thanks to all the players, representatives and the officers of the league for keeping this league efficient to organise and to keep it thriving on and around the greens.

Many thanks to all our sponsors supporting the league. SALOP LEISURE who were the main sponsors this season and I hope we can maintain their support for the upcoming season. Barlows Fire & Security (Alan Mayhew Trophy), Seaton Sports (Merit), BowlsTrader (Pool A/B Trophies), KGJ Insurance (Mike Hinton Pairs), Shropshire Website Design (Fantasy Bowls League) and Shropshire Printers (Predictions League). Without the support of the League’s sponsors then the League and its competitions would not be half so successful.

Congratulations to SIR JOHN BAYLEY who won the 2017 Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League! Only 5 points ahead of Castlefields. This was the second SPBL title for the Bayley and I am sure that they will be aiming to make it three in 2020. The rest of Pool A was made up of Newport, St Georges, Hanwood, Wrockwardine Wood and Wem USC; the rest went into Pool B to battle it out for the BowlsTrader Trophies. The Most Improved Team was won by Hanmer, this was enough of an improvement to lift them from the bottom of the table.

Chester Road finished bottom of the League and had to face the uncertainty of the Play Off…

The 2019 Play Offs saw two league winning teams apply, Adderley (Whitchurch) & Telepost (Tanners). Adderley v Telepost came first, held at Sir John Bayley. After gaining a significant early lead, Adderley held on to beat Telepost by five shots. Adderley went on to play Chester Road in the final at Prees (New Green). This match was tight all the way and there plenty of positive performances on both sides, in particular Ian Howell (Man of the Match) beating Martin Lloyd in the first four. Chester Road held out to win by nine shots and remain in the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League.

The Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy consisted of the 14 members clubs and Telepost searching for silverware. Unfortunately, Ifton withdrew from the first round. At the end of the competition there was a final between two multiple times winners, St Georges and Castlefields held at Chester Road (Premier Green). Castlefields took a narrow lead from the first four where St Georges’ Phil Jones stepped in from reserve to win and take the Man of the Match award. Castlefields then extended their lead in both the middle and back fours to run out comfortably by 58 shots. This gave St Georges their first ever loss in the final of this competition and extended Castlefields’ record to eight wins.

The BowlsTrader Premiership Trophies were played at the end of the season at Newport. These Finals were followed by the League’s Presentation Evening. The Pool A Final on the non-premier green was a narrow contest seeing Wem USC edging passed the hosts, Newport, by just two shots. The Pool B Final was on the premier green and this saw newcomers Highley beat Chester Road by 19 shots.

Individual awards now, and the Seaton Sports Individual Merit, which was revamped to a qualifying and finals night format, went to Liam Stevens (Wrockwardine Wood) defeating Lewis Scott (St Georges) 21-18 in a tense final at Hadley USC. Liam beat Darrell Handley (Highley), Kiah Roberts (Burway) and Mike Beer (Castlefields) en route to final showing what great standard our league has. The League Averages went to Pete Cookson (Newport) who won 14 consecutive matches on his way to a total of 23 wins and an aggregate of +133. The Most Consecutive Wins award went to Scott Simpson (Sir John Bayley) who won 15 consecutive matches to claim this prize. The KGJ Insurance Pairs competition was cancelled and is due to take place at the start of the 2020 season.

As a special for 2019 season a 25th Anniversary Competition was held at Donnington Wood and the winner of this was Keith Wall (Castlefields) who beat his team mate Callum Wraight in the final. This was a successful day that showed off the past and present of the League. Here’s to the next 25 years!
