Holders safely through, Wrockwardine & Wem edge home, Highley win tight battle
The holders Castlefields are safely through the 1st round of the Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy. They beat Bayley by 47 overall, with a full house at home against a Bayley team that contained all Shropshire players. Rich Goddard was best winner 3 at home, where they won by 60, while away Andy Judson was best 4. Aidy Ashley produced a fine result for the Bayley by winning 7 to lead them to a 13 shot win there. Hanwood comfortably beat Chester Road despite losing by 5 away. Paul Griffiths was best for the Road there 10 with Craig Wilson helping limit the damage with a 21-11 card. Chris Stretch was the only winner on Hanwood 18, as three single figure cards did the damage in a 49 shot win, Darren Wellings their best 5. Newport won home and away against Telepost. At Telepost they won by 18 with Dan Hand best winner 2, with Dan Wornell best for the home side 9. Over at Newport it was Pete Farmer who was best winner 3, with just Sam O’Nions winning for the Tanners Shropshire side, 17.
The closest game of the night was between Highley and Burway, with Highley just winning by 4 shots. They won by 33 at home with Andy James their best winner 6 as Mark Rogers was best of the visitor’s two winners 16. On Burway and two single figure wins weren’t enough for the home side, Wayne Rogers the best of them 6 in a 29 chalk win. Joint captain Ben Dixon said “it was a very tight game as expected and we were a few players short. Bill Staite came into to the Prem fold for the first time this season and won 12 and a superb card at home off Andy James got us off to a good start. We had a steady start away with Dave Scriven winning and Danny Statham holding Kiah Roberts to 17 to put us a few up. The back three including myself started slow and wasn’t going great away, but Stuart Gittings put in a captain’s performance to win 14. Paul busby and David East both winning at home put us 4 up with just me left on the green against Duncan Presley 20-14 down. I somehow found the best 5/10 minutes I had played all game and got to 20 for us to win the game.” Two winners for Highley helped reduce the score, the best of them being Stuart Gittings 14. There was a close game between Wem USC and Bylet with Wem winning by 9. They won by 18 at home, George Williams the best card 9, while Jamie Taylor was best for the away side 13. Bylet only won by 13 at home despite 4 winners, Grant Cooper the best of them 10. Connor Whitehall’s 12 win was best for the visitors. Wrockwardine Wood beat Meole Brace by 9 with both sides winning away. Skipper Rob Jones said it was an “excellent team performance last night. We had four reserves come in due to work and holiday commitments. Delighted how the 12 performed at home and especially away.” They won by 15 away, Jamie King their best winner 9, with Will Tarrell best for the home side 13. At home they had Mark Picknell as their best winner 11, with Mark Thomas best for the visitors 8 as they won there by 6.
Hanmer received a walkover against Ifton, who will be fined £25 for pulling out of the competition. St Georges had a bye.
