The 2019 Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy Final takes place tonight on the premier green at Chester Road with the two most successful teams taking part. Castlefields are the current holders, while St Georges have not won this since 2012, when beating Chester Road in a thriller by 2, a repeat of that final would be some spectacle! There is class on both teams, with some very tasty draws. Mike Beer against Pete Grimston at number one could set the tone of the final, while there will be no love lost between Glyn Herbert and ex-Field man Clay Flattley. Keith Walton and Jim Kellett is a battle of two club stalwarts with plenty of experience between them, while Keith Wall and John Cooke is sure to be a loud clash! Andy Judson has had a good season and plays the reliable Dave King, while Andy Morgan will have his hands full against Callum Wraight. It’s experience versus youth as Martin Codd plays Mike Wainwright, while Ian Gaut is back in the St Georges fold now and plays Adie Rowe. Into the back and two players who have been at each club for over 30 years clash as Paul Williams takes on Tony Rhodes. Lewis Scott had a fine season for the Dragons and plays Adam Jones, who held his nerve in the last two rounds to get the Fields through. Paul Beer has already had the experience of two finals so far this season and faces the back to fitness Mark Taylor. The last game sees Rich Goddard take on Martin Gaut, both men knowing how to handle the pressure last on.
Castlefields skipper Alan Peach says “we go into the game against the Dragons trophy less as the Bayley have won the league which should make our players more determined. We are not in the habit of not winning trophies. I have alot of respect for the players of St Georges who in my opinion have some dangerous players. It will be a tough game for both teams, may the best team win on the night and every person playing, watching or supporting have a enjoyable evening. St Georges joint captain Tony Rhodes says “history says these games are great occasions and I expect the same tonight. Some cracking games which could turn the match in different directions. The lads are really looking forward to it!”
It promises to be a great game between the two most successful teams in the league. There will be a programme on sale with player profiles in as well as a full preview and sponsors profiles costing a £1. There will also be a raffle on for a bottle of whiskey, wine and some biscuits.
I will also have some 25 year anniversary books available for sale tonight for £10.
There will be live scores available here.
