Taylor Support Shropshire Premier Bowls League
The 25th Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy takes place tonight at Meole Brace at 6.30 p.m. as record 8 time winners Castlefields take on current league champions Sir John Bayley. Both teams are packed with quality players in what promises to be an exciting final on the non premier green. The Bayley are without six usual players for this Final due to holidays and other commitments, but fortunately have a big enough squad to be able to cover these players. But they come off a poor result on the other green at Meole Brace last night with just 4 winners. In contrast the Fields scored an incredible 15-1 win at Chester Road and are flying in the league, averaging 10 points a game so far this season.
The Fields lead out with former Champion of Champion Mike Beer at number one, while the Bayley lead out with Dave Lloyd, who is now established in the County side. Number two sees two former League Averages winners clash in Paul Williams and Alex Jones, while Rich Goddard and Clay Flattley meet at number three, with Clay facing his former club. Adrian Rowe will hope green knowledge will help him at number four as he plays Bayley captain Chris Worthington.
The middle four sees the quality clashes continue. Russ Pugh has had a great start to the season and plays a reserve in Ant Bracken, who has been in and out of the Bayley side in recent years. Number six is Jon Palmer versus Scott Simpson in what could be the match up of the final with both players having won major competitions. Andy Judson against Gareth Herbert is at number seven, with Gareth having returned from an operation recently after playing in the 1st round of this competition. Graham Wall will hope green knowledge at number eight versus former Staffordshire Merit winner Nick Wyer will help him.
At the back and Castlefields’ other Champion of Champion winner Callum Wraight will look to continue his form from his week in Whitby as he plays Kane Beaman at number nine, who has been in form himself in the league. Number Ten sees joint skipper Adam Jones take on Kevin Hocknull, who has helped the Bayley reach the final with his performances in the last two round. Number eleven sees two new players in the league with Carl Wear playing Michael Cooper with whoever adapting best to the big stage most likely to win. Number 12 sees the returning Kevin Price play Tom Roden, who isn’t playing regularly this season, but still knows his way round a bowls green.
