Bylet & Burway win big, Wrockties whitewash
Bylet won big at the bottom in week 15 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League to close the gap on the teams above after they beat Hanmer 11-3. Spokeswoman Cheryl Caswell said “as a team, we were pleased to get off to a good start and to keep that going throughout the match, which is gonna be crucial if we are to improve on our recent run of matches. Leading 3-1 off the front four was a great start and we were able to build on that as the game progressed, having a clean sweep of the middle and then two out of the back four. I think Hanmer, who were missing a few players themselves, really battled to get their winners and may feel disappointed to not get one or two more!” Best winner for Bylet was Sam Millward 8 with captain Mike Gilpin best for the visitors 12. They are now one point behind Highley who didn’t get any winners at runaway leaders Wrockwardine Wood. Andy Jones was the Wrockites best winner 6 as they extended their lead over Castlefields who could only beat Wem USC 10-4. Russell Pugh kept us his fine form to be best winner 7, with Ian Metcalfe best for the visitors 14.
Burway had a fine 13-1 win over Hanwood to close the gap on their visitors. Joint skipper Jesse James says “our result on Friday did not surprise me. The green had some pace in it and every player from 1 to 12 played admirably. If we maintain our current form then we can push for a champions league spot!” Best winner was Jesse himself 11, with Ash Wellings the winner for the away side 16. Chester Road managed to move up a place as they won 9-5 against Newport with Mark Holland best winner 4 and Cody Everitt best for the visitors 7. Ifton will be happy with 6 winners at Meole Brace, just losing out by 5 chalks. Craig Griffiths was their best winner 8, with Julian Cooke winning by the same score for the hosts. It was an even closer game at Sir John Bayley as the home side won by just 2 chalks against St Georges with 5 winners. Dragons stand in captain Matt Rhodes said “it was a really good result for us as side. It’s always a tough trip to the Bayley, especially with a side as good as theirs. The green was really difficult on the night with the green and brown on there but both teams played well and each ground out results where it mattered. Mike Wainwright played exceptionally well against Spencer Clarke, and Gordon Hawkins was immense full corners against Paul Beer bringing it home for the home side. I think we were unlucky not to come away with an away with but we would have taken that, I think, if someone would have offered it at the beginning of the night. Good bunch of lads at SJB and it was a good battle on the night.” Captain Chris Worthington was best winner 6 for the Champions, and Martin Gaut was best for the visitors 11.
Wrockwardine Wood lead by 23 over Castlefields, who are another 26 ahead of Sir John Bayley. Bylet are one point behind Highley at the bottom, who are another 5 adrift of Chester Road. Alex Jones and Ash Wellings are top of the League Averages, with Ash just one behind Mike Gilpin for the Most Consecutive Wins.
