Wrockites close in, Hanwood earn big win, Newport form continues
Wrockwardine Wood are closing in on their first title after winning 9-7 at Ifton in week 18 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Skipper Rob Jones was “delighted with the result if not the performance. Didn’t think we played well at all to be fair compared to recent weeks, but we ground a result out and found a way. This team just keep finding a way.” Best winner was Stu Rutter 7 with Gerwyn Davies best for the home side 9. Castlefields lost further ground to the leaders with just 3 winners at Hanwood. Home joint captain Mark Shore said “Friday was a great result for us against a weakened Castlefields. We were also missing a few players for this game also. The green was rapid to say the least which saw the game end at 10:30. We took all four in the first four with Sam Downes playing very well against an excellent Adie Rowe. The middle was shared with Adam Jones and Graham Wall playing well to get the Fields on the board. It was great to see Dave Burton back on Hanwood rolling back the years to get what we believe to be his first premier win in six years following years of inactivity. I was delighted to see him back. In the back the sting went out of the green a little and we picked up a further 3 points with Ash Wellings getting back to winning ways and Simon Lane keeping up his good current form.” Best winner for them was Rich Lawson 7 while Mike Beer was best for the away side 14. The Champions Sir John Bayley are still 3rd after 5 winners at Hanmer. Dave Lloyd was best winner 11 while Matt Beeston was best for the hosts 8. St Georges are just 3 points behind 3rd after defeating Highley 11-3, who slip to the bottom of the table. Roy Bradburn was best winner 7 while John Heath was best for the away side 10.
Newport’s good form continued as they moved into the top half with a 11-3 win over Wem USC. Captain Ayden Smith said it was “another top home result, just what we needed going into the next 2 weeks where we have very tough games both away from home. I think cementing our place as a mid table team this season is priority.” Ian Whittington was their best winner 7 and Derek Wright was Wem’s best 13. Bylet moved off bottom spot with a 9-5 win over Chester Road with Cheryl Caswell best winner 9 and Andy Smith best for the away side 7. Burway moved into the top 6 with a 10-4 win over Meole Brace. Best winner was Adam Dovey 4 with Mark Thomas best for the visitors 13.
Wrockwardine Wood are 30 ahead of Castlefields, who are another 20 ahead of Sir John Bayley in 3rd. Highley are 5 below Bylet and another point behind Chester Road. Alex Jones is joined by Mike Beer and Gilpin at the top of the League Averages. His run of consecutive wins ends on 9, matching Mike Gilpin’s run earlier this season.
