Wrockites one game away, Wem win away, Hanwood & Ifton continue form
Wrockwardine Wood are one game away from winning their maiden title after winning 9-7 at Meole Brace in week 22 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Wrockwardine skipper Rob Jones said it was “a close game all night, with lots of individual games potentially going either way. Full Credit to the group, they battled for every shot and once again got over the line by two shots to take the bonus four points and overall win. I think 9 away wins equals the premier league record, with two away games remaining we obviously want to set a new high.” Best winner was Sally King 7 with Julian Cooke winning by the same score for the home side. 2nd placed Castlefields got 4 winners at Burway as the teams behind them closed the gap further. Callum Wraight made a welcome return to win 10, with Len Lewis best for the home side 6 as they gave themselves a buffer for their first ever top half finish. Hanwood are now 3rd as they beat Newport 11-3. Joint captain Mark Shore said it was a “good performance from the team on Friday on a very very quick surface. The standout story in this game was that we were missing a few regulars in the team so we made the decision to give a deserved first Premier league game to Emily Cunningham to make history at Hanwood by becoming the First Lady bowler to play in the league. She fell 9-0 behind but kept her cool and fought back in impressive fashion to get a 21-20 victory. The whole club were ecstatic with her victory. We had another 21-20 victory and a 20 & 19 loser so the result was a fair reflection on the game. Well done Emily your team mates were proud of you.” Best winner for them was Darren Wellings 7 with Cody Everitt best for the away side 12. Sir John Bayley are 4th after getting 5 winners at Chester Road. Clay Flattley led the way winning 10 with Paul Griffiths best winner for the Roaders 8. St Georges are 5th, just 7 behind Castlefields in 2nd despite just 3 winners at an in-form Ifton. Ifton captain Dickie Jones said it was “a hard fought win against a good St. Georges team which keeps our good run going. Neil Kershaw and Craig Griffiths (best winner 7) had good wins in the front and Keiron Roberts bowled well in the back.” The Dragons’ best winner was Ian Gaut 8.
Wem USC pulled off a massive win at bottom spot rivals Bylet 11-5 to boost their chances of survival. Best winner was Andy Marshall with Rob Fuller best for the home side 4. Highley also boosted their chances of survival with 5 winners at Hanmer led by John Heath and Dave East 13. Hammer’s best was captain Mike Gilpin 4.
Wrockwardine Wood lead by 50 at the top of the table with Castlefields now just one in front of Hanwood in 2nd. Bylet are 2 behind Highley who are another point behind Wem USC. Mike Beer is one win ahead of Mike Gilpin at the top of the League Averages and is now tied with Mike Gilpin and Alex Jones on 9 consecutive wins.
