It was third time lucky for Rich Lawson as he won the Charles Beddard Trophy for the first time in his third final. After reaching the final in 1985 and 2001, a record long gap between finals for the same person, 38 years, he finally won after beating Jamie King 13 in the final, becoming the first Hanwood and Baschurch bowler to do so. His last final also came when we had our first County President in Mike Hinton!
He had a close shave in the first round, trailing Jesse James 20-17 who had played a 3 inch and a foot bowl for game, before drawing it and running out. He came from 10-4 down on Phil King to win 15, then dispatched Keith Wall 7 after racing 14-1 up. He then played immaculate against Hanwood team mate Ash Wellings on a straight mark to lead 13-4 and 19-6 to win 7. In the final he didn’t let up, going 7-2 and 15-6 up, and then didn’t allow Jamie to get back at him, beating some excellent bowls to keep the momentum and won 13. Jamie had beaten one of the stars and shocks of the day, Harry Church, 17 in the Semi Final, surviving a fightback to 17 across by Harry after leading 17-12. Harry had beaten Simon Rhodes 19 first game, then beaten former Champion Rich Goddard 5 after racing 15-1 up on a 20m mark, and then defeated the reigning All England Champion Callum Wraight 14 after leading all the way from going 6-0 up. Jamie had beaten Scott Harries 13 in his Quarter Final, coming back from 8-2 down in the corners to lead 13-10 and 16-13 before running out. Ash had his own fightback in the corners against Spencer Clarke, 11-5 and 15-11 down to lead 18-15 and win 19.
Rich Lawson said afterwards on the microphone, “I never thought that I would get to another final. I’m just really over the moon. I would just like to thank Newport, although after the first two games I was cursing them. But the rain came down and helped me. I’m just really chuffed and thank you everybody.”

Well done to Rich Lawson on his win, as well as the other three Semi Finalists in reaching the All England Finals on 29th July at Heaton Park. Good luck to all four on emulating Callum’s success last season.

1st Round:
Spencer Clarke raced 9-2 up but then went 11-9 and 13-10 down against Kiah Roberts. Spencer then hit back to lead 18-15 and 20-16 and won 18.
Mark Shore was 8-3 down versus Josh Bradburn but then went 13-8 up. Josh couldn’t get back at him as he maintained his lead to win 15.
Gary Beff was only 5-4 up against Will Tyler before going 11-7 up and running out.
Ash Wellings went 10-3 up on Pete Farmer and with the help of five 2s went 20-12 up and won 13.
Phil King had an even game with Ben Hinton early on before going 13-9 and 15-10 up. From 15-11 he ran out in ones.
Rich Lawson was 8-2 up early on against Jesse James. Jesse got back to 8 across and then led 15-9. He went 18-14 and 20-17 up and lay game on with two good bowls but Rich drew them and ran out.
Keith Wall from 9 across with Will Tarrell then went 15-9 and 17-10 up, and won 12.
Nick Davies had a good start to lead 10-2 and then 16-9 against Tony Rhodes. But Tony got back to 16-14 down, but Nick won 15.
Scott Moseley went 8-3 up on Ian MacDonald and then 16-5. Ian did get back to 18-13 down but Scott finished it off 14.
Scott Harries was 7 across before then going 12-7 up on Martin Gaut. From 15-10 up he ran out across the middle.
Andy Marshall was 6-4 down on Ian Gaut before he went 13-6 up. Ian got back to trail 13-12, but Andy upped it again and won 14.
Jamie King was 10-5 up on Steve Roberts and then 16-10 up. Steve got back to lead 18-17 but Jamie ran out.
Adie Rowe was 9-3 down on Craig Wilson, but hit back to lead 13-10 and then 18-13, and won 15.
Paul Williams had sciatica so had to withdraw, giving Callum Wraight a bye.
Rich Goddard was 9-4 up on Michael Cooper and then 14-10 ahead, and ran out.
Harry Church was 5-0 down on Simon Rhodes but then went 10-7 up and extended this to 17-11. Simon got back to 19 across but Harry got the two he needed.
2nd Round:
Spencer Clarke was 8-1 up over and then 14-5 up over Mark Shore, before winning 9.
Ash Wellings was 11-5 down on Gary Beff but then went 15-13 up. He then went 19-15 ahead and won 17.
Rich Lawson was 10-4 down on Phil King but then went 16-12 up. Phil got back to 16-15 down but Rich ran out.
Keith Wall was 6-0 down on Nick Davies but then went 10-6 up. He then went 16-7 ahead before Nick got back to 16-12, however Keith ran out.
Scott Harries was 5-1 down on Scott Moseley but got back to 14 across, Scott Harries went 18-15 up and won 17.
Jamie King was 8-2 ahead and then 15-5 up on Andy Marshall. He kept this lead to win 12.
Callum Wraight was 4-2 down on Adie Rowe but then went 10-4 ahead. From 13-7 up he ran out.
Harry Church raced 15-1 ahead on Rich Goddard on a 20/25m mark, and kept this lead to win 5
