Relegation was a key issue spoken about before the 1996 season, with a possibility of a team being relegated if a suitable candidate was found from the area of the team finishing bottom. This increased the pressure at the bottom of the table as well as the pressure at the top to win the title.

Castlefields were favourites to retain their title but it was Chester Road who flew out of the traps collecting 32 points from their first three matches, and despite a 14-0 whitewash of St Georges, it was Castlefields that were top after 8 games. It was tight at the bottom as just one point separated the bottom three of Wrockwardine Wood, Hanwood and Archibald Worthington. Wem USC were flying though and moved top after a 13-1 hammering of Hanwood. After 13 games, just four points separated Chester Road, Wem USC and Castlefields at the top, while at the bottom it was Archibald Worthington and Wrockwardine Wood who were deadlocked on 62 points. Archie though got just one winner at Wrockwardine to go clear bottom, while leaders Chester Road won 13-1 to extend their lead at the top.

Chester Road then won at Donnington Wood 11-3, but Castlefields beat Hanwood 13-1 to keep with them ahead of them clashing in Whitchurch. Chester Road turned the screw on the Champions and beat them 11-3 to move 22 points clear at the top and 24 ahead of the Fields. But with just 3 games left at home, and Castlefields having 6, it was far from over. After 17 games Chester Road led by 11 points to Castlefields, with Wem USC a further point behind. Archie were 9 points behind Sir John Bayley at the bottom of the table, but did have a game in  hand.

Wem were eliminated from the title race as they got just one winner at St Georges, while Chester Road got just 3 at Meole Brace as the pressure told. The Fields went top after a 11-3 win over Craven Arms, moving two points clear of the Roaders as they got just 3 winners again, this time at St Georges. Sir John Bayley got 4 winners at Archibald Worthington to keep themselves clear of the bottom, but Archie bounced back with a 12-2 win over Hanwood to close the gap on the Bayley and Donnington Wood above them. Chester Road kept fighting to the end with a 9-5 win at Craven Arms, but a 14-0 whitewash in the last game saw Castlefields home and their second title. Their opponents Donnington Wood finished bottom after that scoreline, with Archie beating St Georges 10-4 and Sir John Bayley defeating Hanwood 11-3. They faced an anxious wait to see if the Mid Shropshire League winner could and would apply to be in the league. But fortunately for them it was St Georges’ second team that won the Mid Shropshire league, and prevented the first ever Playoff taking place. Rich Goddard of Castlefields won both the League Averages with 20  wins and Most Consecutive Wins award with 12 straight successes.

This season saw the first ever Alan Mayhew Trophy as devised by Mark Burroughs. This was a six home six away competition for all of our teams in the league. The first ever final was between Battlefield and Wem USC on Donnington Wood. It was Wem that made all the running, with Dave Hanson and Ian Price both winning 6 to help them to a 69 shot success

The Premier League Merit was played at British Sugar and Tony Rhodes of St Georges beat Derek Wright 19 in the final to claim the £100 first prize and the John Coxill Trophy. Tony beat Simon Parsonage 18 in the Semi Finals while Derek was seeing off Keith Wall 21-20.
