The “Mike Hinton” Premier League Pairs, held at Meole Brace Bowling Club, on Sunday 2nd May, was won in its inaugural year by the Craven Arms pairing of John Coxill and Pete Griffiths.
In a competition boosted by late entries on the day, 26 pairs from 10 clubs took part. After over 9 hours bowling, they overcame the Castlefields pairing of Paul Williams and Kevin Price 21-20 in an exciting final. John and Pete had played well all day but after leading 4-3 in the early stages found themselves 13-7 and 18-10 down before Pete struck at Paul Williams counting bowl and removed it to leave them a pair. With a “three” and a “two” they got back to 17-18 before Williams and Price counted a double to leave them on 20. John then counted with his two woods in the corner and then counted the two they needed to pick up the winners prize of £140 and the Mike Hinton Trophy.
In the semi finals Coxill and Griffiths beat Spencer Clarke and Mark Shore (S J Bayley) 21-15 and Williams and Price beat the Ford pairing of Dave Hoffman and Kevin Jones 21-9.
