St Georges win big, Wrockites edge home, Bayley & Ifton win well
St Georges won big in week 4 of the Taylor Support Shropshire Premier Bowling League after winning 13-3 at Horsehay. Stand in captain Martin Gaut said “the Dragons delivered a fantastic away performance, securing a well-deserved win. After a 2-2 scoreline from the front four players, our middle and back fours truly excelled, pushing us to victory. There were several impressive games throughout the evening, but the clash between John Roberts Jnr and Gordon Hawkins was a definite highlight. In a high-quality contest, Hawkins ultimately prevailed with a score of 21-13. While it’s never easy seeing a teammate on the losing end, witnessing Andy Garbett achieve his first Premier League victory was a genuinely heartwarming moment. It perfectly illustrates that persistence pays off!” Best winners for them were Nige Evans and Ian Pessall 21-10, with home captain Andy Garbett best for that 15 win. winning 15. Wrockwardine Wood edged home 11-5 at Wem USC by just one chalk. Captain Liam Stevens said it was “another thriller for us to follow the Castlefields home one – always a super close game on Wem, our last three visits have all been settled by fewer than ten chalks. Chuffed to get on the right side of this one after dipping last year. Full credit to Wem for their fight – they were absolutely dead and buried by half 8, then fired about 30 chalks into us with no reply across three games. Josh was 13-13 last game on and could only concede two more – repeated his heroics from the first match and licked a foot bowl full corners to win us the match. 9 points up versus last year’s equivalent fixtures. Have rode our luck a bit, but a really strong start to the season.” Best winner for them was Sam Millward 4, with Ian Metcalfe best for the home side 6.
Sir John Bayley and Ifton both won 12-2 to keep up their good home form. The Bayley beat Burway, best winner being Paul Evans 6, with Richard Lane best for Burway 10, while Ifton defeated Highley led by Ian Jones winning 5. Highley’s best was Danny Statham 14. Castlefields lost a point to the Bayley after beating Bylet 11-3, Ash Wellings and Wayne Rogers best winners 5. Ian Sturdy was best for the visitors 7. Hanwood will be very happy with 6 winners at Adderley, considering their start. Skipper Simon Lane commenting “Adderley‘ ’s first 4 played great against a strong Hanwood front, they also continued with the first 2 out of the middle making us 6-0, then Craig Ashley played some inspired bowls from 19-13 down to run out, that raised our spirits and the boys dug in from there to end up winning the last 6. After what looked like it was going to be a disaster we ended up leaving pretty happy! Phil Lyttle the best of them 12. Jack Hazeldine was best for the hosts 21-2. Hanmer defeated Meole Brace 10-4, Colin Jones best winner 9 for them and Tracy Bound best winner for Meole 7.
