Record 10 of 25: Most Alan Mayhew Trophy Wins

Castlefields have won the most Alan Mayhew Trophies with 10 victories in total. They won their first two in 1997 and 1998 beating Chester Road and Battlefield respectively. They won in again in 2000, sandwiching two years they lost in the final. They didn’t appear in another final till 2006 when they beat Meole Brace in the final, but lost the following year to St Georges on Ellesmere top green. They won it again in 2008, and again in 2013 against the Bowring, with Mike Beer becoming the first player to win 0 in the final. They suffered a shock loss in 2016 to Meole Brace, but then dominated it winning it three times on the spin in 2018, 2019 and 2022. They lost to Sir John Bayley in 2023 but then won it again the following year against the same team. They then lost this year’s final to Ifton, meaning they have appeared in the final 6 times on the bounce, only losing two games in that time, and have appeared in 16 finals in all.

Only St Georges have won the trophy more than twice, winning it 6 times overall but not since 2012, which was the closest final when they beat Chester Road by just 2 shots until Newport beat Burway by 1 on Pontesbury in 2015.
