Archie beat leaders, Burway thump Bayley, Castlefields beat champs and Bylet get first win
It was a night of high drama in the Flowfit Shropshire Premier League tonight with some impressive results for teams. Archibald Worthington beat the league leaders Meole Brace tonight in a 10-4 win. Anthony Heath was the star again with another MVP award in beating Gary Neal 20. They never looked back Archie after leading 7-1 with only Colin Beaman’s 12 win stemming the Archie tide. Meole had gone close with Gary’s and Darren Wellings’ 20 loss but they did take 3 out of the back 4 with Nigel Bound’s 21-12 win earning the MVP award. John Paddington’s 21-10 best win over away captain Mark Thomas meant Archie will be very happy with a 10-4 win. John Digby, spokesman for Archie, commented “an all round team performance where everyone played well and gave their all. Couldn’t have asked for anymore.”
Burway earned the biggest win of the night against a Sir John Bayley side that were short of 4 players, including captain Tom Roden. However spokesman for the Bayley Sam Plant said “Burway thoroughly deserved their result tonight, from 1-12 they were clinical. But it was disappointing not to convert our close cards but credit has to be given for Burway for winning them.” This was all despite Burway’s league average winner from 2013 Wayne Rogers being beaten by Norman Harvey from 20-16 up, with both captains full of praise for Norman who thoroughly deserved his MVP, playing marks to and from the crown. Spencer Clarke was the other winner for the Bayley winning 21-18 against Ben Allen. Home captain Duncan Pressley had praise for Adam Dovey winning 20 from 19-14 down, and Roy Crowther who won 8 against Staffordshire county player Chris Ward. They were a few near misses for the Bayley with Alex Jones getting 19 against Len Lewis, Paul Reeves 18 against Kev Dovey and Gordon Hawkins 16 against Russell Davies. Best winner for Burway was Chris Dovey winning 4.
Castlefields beat champions Newport 10-4 tonight. Andy Duckett led the way with a 21-5 win, with Paul Williams 21-8 win earning him the MVP award. Winners for Newport were 2 13s and 2 17s, with Scott Harries and Alan Davidson winning 21-13, the former earning the MVP award of home debutant and Warwick & Worcester star Phil Clinton, Sam Millward and new County player Phil Emery winning 17.
Bylet earned their first win of the season tonight with a 7-7 win against Wem USC. The main difference was Tom McGill’s 21-7 win with new full time signing Rob Steventon earning the MVP award, and new signing Rich Taylor winning 21-16. Best winner for Wem was Scott Thomas 21-13 with Derek Wright getting MVP winning 19.
Hadley didn’t match last year’s win at Wrockwardine Wood but will be happy with their 5 there this season. It was 2-2 and 4-4 but Wrockwardine took 3 out of the back 4 to give them the 9-5. But it could have been different if Hadley hadn’t had won two games 21-20, with Adrian Smith coming back from 15-3 down in the corners to win, whilst Jamie Wyer’s win earned him the MVP award over the returning Rich Morris. BBranded Premier League Merit Winner Stuart Rutter continued his fine form with an MVP and best win over Dave Price, winning 8 over the middle. Nick Mullinder produced a fine comeback from 16-10 down to win 19 for Hadley while Phil King was best winner over home captain Stuart Clee winning 14.
Ifton got another great away result as the narrowly lost at Bowring 8-6. Rob Roden earned the home MVP award as he beat Nicky Jones 11, with Ifton spokesman Nicky saying “he played very well for 11 as Rob played exceptional.” John Cooke ran out from 19-13 down to give Bowring a 3-1 first four lead but Ifton fought back with debutant Richard Zolman winning 7 and an awesome Leighton Roberts winning 8 and the MVP award. The returning Kevin Nicholas won 18 to and Craig Griffiths was said to “have had a great game with Brian Jarvis” winning 20. It was left to Mark Taylor winning 3 to bring home the aggregate for Bowring, as well as a good win for Dave Lloyd over Welsh county player and recent Meole Open Winner Andy Hughes to 10.
St Georges recorded a good 10-4 win over Chester Road, but could have been better with having 2 20s and an 18 loser. Andy James earned his first win for the Dragons winning 20 to give them a 4-0 lead, and this was built on by Nigel Evans MVP 5 win and another single figure home win for new signing Simon Madeley to earn a 7-1 lead for St Georges, despite a 21-20 win for Paul Latham. But Chester Road did what they did at the Bayley, winning 3 out of the back 4, with Carl Hinton the best winner and MVP winning 15, Mark Burdon 20 and Andy Moss 18.
Meole Brace still lead at the top but the gap has been closed with St Georges only 2 point behind, and Newport and Castlefields a further point behind. At the bottom Bylet prop up the table, 5 behind Archibald Worthington.
