Newport within reach of title, Bylet close gap at bottom

It was a significant week 22 of the Flowfit Shropshire Premier Bowling League at the top of the table as Newport edged closer to the 2015 title, but only just. They beat their nearest rivals Meole Brace 9-5, but at 5-5 and Meole up by a single shot it looked like the title race could take a significant turn. But home players Mick Jones won 9 and captain Dale Rudrum won 16, and MVP, to bring it home for the champions and extend their lead to 19 points. Chris Grocott was best winner for the hosts 7 , with Will Tarrell winning 5 and MVP for the visitors.

At the bottom of the table Bylet gained two points on Archibald Worthington as they got 4 winners at Burway. Captain Mick Harries led the way with a 6 win, but Rob Steventon won MVP for winning 9. The two county players for Burway led the way, Wayne Rogers winning 8 for best winner and Kiah Roberts 9 for MVP. Archie scored 2 at Bowring, which pleased home captain Rich Lawson. “Another great home performance, pleased with how we adjusted to a heavier green, Glyn Hayward and Josh Bradburn played very well (both best winner 8 with Glyn MVP) with Aaron close behind. Rob Adams was excellent for them (winning 12 and MVP). Hoping now to carry this team form onto next week. “

Behind the top two St Georges maintained their 3rd place with a 10-4 win over rivals Castlefields, but by just 9 shots. Home captain Tony Rhodes comments that “it was a really pleasing effort from the team to win 10-4 over the competitive and lively lads from the Fields. 4 winners to start with and great to see us win the close one. Andy James arrived against Clay Flattley. Nip and tuck in the middle then 3 out of the 4 at the back. Green was immaculate although as ever which was not to the Fields taste but well done you Dragons!” Best winner for the Dragons was Ian Gaut 10, while captain himself Tony got MVP for a 20 win over former Dragon Phil Clinton. For the visitors Paul Williams was best winner 8 and captain Keith Walton got MVP for winning 10.

Sir John Bayley gained a point on St Georges with a comfortable 11-3 win over Hadley USC. Paul Evans was best winner 6, with Will Plant winning MVP for his 8 win. For Hadley the winners were Steve Homer 14, Rob Burroughs 15 and MVP and captain Phil King 19. Ifton also kept up pace still being a point behind the Bayley with a 11-3 home win over Wem USC. Welsh Merit winner Leighton Roberts was the star for the home side, winning 0 and MVP, with John Bushill best winner and MVP for the visitors 14. Wrockwardine Wood were the big losers dropping from 4th to 6th as they got 5 winners at Chester Road. They will be happy with those 5 points though, as 2 were 18 and 2 were 20 winners, Martin Williams being the other winning 7. Steve Roberts got MVP for winning 18. For the hosts, Gary Beff and Paul Griffiths won 10, whilst former captain Dave Rogers won MVP for winning 12.

At the top the gap is now 19 points behind Newport and Meole Brace with St Georges 3rd 11 behind Meole. The gap at the bottom between Bylet and Archibald Worthington is now just 1 point, with the two meeting in a couple of weeks time at Bylet.

It has closed up at the top of the League Averages as Rich Lawson is now back at the top on aggregate. Sam Millward, Rob Burroughs, Glyn Picknell and Pete Farmer are all on the same number of wins as him though. Rob Burroughs’ MVP at the Bayley has moved him to top with 7 MVPs with Paul Williams and Stuart Rutter one behind.
