2015 Review: April

For the last 6 days of 2015 I will be looking back at the year of 2015 in the Flowfit Shropshire Premier Bowling League. The Year started with a major change in the officers of the league. Out went the long-serving Mark Burroughs, John Nash and Mike Hinton and in came young guns Rob Burroughs, Tom Roden and Martin Gaut along with the experienced Mick Jones, who along with the still standing John Coxill, formed a new look 2015 Officials list.

At the start of the season and with current Champions Newport, looking for a record breaking 5 titles in a row, having the week off the focus was on those who attempted to challenge them. Castlefields had an eye catching 9-5 win at Chester Road by 5 chalks, St Georges won by the same score at Hadley USC and Sir John Bayley gained an excellent 6 at Wrockwardine Wood, only dipping out by a few shots, to give them all a good start to their seasons. Bowring gained an excellent 5 at Meole Brace and followed this up with an eye catching 10-4 win at home to Newport, whilst Meole bounced back from their disappointing start winning 12-2 at Bylet. Hadley USC nearly pulled off a remarkable win at Castlefields when they lost 9-5 and by a single chalk, but they pulled off their best result of the season the week after beating Archibald Worthington 13-1. St Georges good away form continued with an excellent 6 at Sir John Bayley, whilst Newport got their season started with a 11-3 home win over Burway then followed it up with a 14-0 win against Bylet in their rearranged game. But their poor away form continued with 4 at Castlefields, while the Bayley continued to struggle getting hammered 12-2 at Burway. Archibald Worthington pulled off one of the shock results of the season beating in-form Meole Brace 10-4 at home, and Bylet earned their first win of the season winning 7-7 against Wem USC.

At the end of the month Meole Brace led by 2 points from St Georges with Castlefields and Newport a further point behind. At the bottom Bylet were 5 adrift of Archibald Worthington.

In the Alan Mayhew Trophy this month all the first round matches were completed. Two walkovers were given to Castlefields and Sir John Bayley while the closest game was St Georges edging out Hadley USC by just 2 chalks. Full results are below:
