Bowring earn solid start

Bowring earned a solid start tonight after beating visiting Castlefields 10-4 but by just 16 chalks. It was an even start after the first four with Castlefields just ahead on shots. Stuart Clee enjoyed a good home debut, being joint best winner by winning 9 over the middle, but Luke Jones virtually ran out in the corners to cancel out this card and be best winner for the visitors. Paul Williams played well on a 30m straight mark to beat home captain Rich Lawson 13 while Mike Beer and Rob Roden enjoyed a decent game, with Rob going 20-14 up from 14 across before Mike got back to 19 in the corners.

Into the middle and Callum was at his best to win 6 fiddling over the crown, but the rest of the four was advantage Bowring. Aaron King played exceptionally well to win MVP and joint best winner by winning 9, and another debutant Andy Jones won 11 from 11-9 down on a long mark over the middle. The other game was a close affair, the returning Steve Cox for the home side just edging out Dave Peach 20 after being up most of the game. This meant Bowring led 5-3 and by 2 shots going into the back.

Bowring had the upper hands in all the games at the back and made this pay in three of them. Dave Lloyd played well corners to win 10 to seal the aggregate, while the other three games were close affairs but Bowring edged two of them. Jamie King beat former Bowring player Mark Taylor 19, and Steve Broome recovered from a good run down the side of the green by Russ Pugh to win 18. Despite a good run on a 35m mark by Glyn Hayward, the visiting Rich Goddard got into the corners and won 18 to gain the MVP award and 4 winners for the Fields lads.

Home captain Rich Lawson was delighted with the result. “A great start to the season with all the new lads doing really well, four of them winning and the other having a tough draw against Callum but he’ll bounce back. Aaron was outstanding winning 9 and we showed our fighting spirit by winning most of the close games which proved to be all the difference. The green was a leveller tonight but we adapted well to it being heavy after all the rain, just the platform I was looking for and something solid to build on!”

Some of you would have seen it live on Facebook, plus some videos and photos. I will place these on here tomorrow afternoon.
