Black Tech Ltd Alan Mayhew 1st Round Preview

The Black Tech Ltd Alan Mayhew Trophy 1st round takes place tonight with just the 4 out of the 7 ties taking place. Hanmer have been unable to field a team due to Flintshire League Commitments so have had to withdraw and give Burway a walkover. Two other games have had to be moved due to a clash with the Fullwood Cup games. Meole Brace v Newport will be played on Wednesday 4th May and St Georges v Hanwood on Wednesday 27th April. So this leaves four first round ties to be completed. The closest looks like it will be between Wrockwardine Wood and Wem USC. Wem USC did the double over Wrockwardine Wood last season so will fancy their chances of advancing. But Wem have yet to win this season, so captain Mike Dulson knows “it’s an important game for us to try and build some confidence after a difficult start to the season. It’s important to get a response from the Wem lads. Both teams have similar home greens, hence why both teams play well at each other’s respective venues. I am expecting a tight game.” Opposite captain Tom Langford was part of the Wrockwardine team that lost at home to Wem last season and is “seeking payback” for their only home blemish all season. “It’s important for us to get a good home result but with how we’ve started this season we feel we can do well away also. The green will be important for us but the strength we have at home it should make for an interesting night.”

Another team winless this season is Chester Road, who take on Sir John Bayley. These two teams played each other in the Quarter Finals last season with Chester Road winning at 36 at home before the Bayley couldn’t field a side at home but the Bayley have strengthened this season and will be looking for some silverware. Chester Road will be looking for some confidence to the season after only scoring 7 points so far but that good run to the Semi Finals to the last season might inspire them. Bylet play Bowring 5 days after the teams met at the Bylet, where Bylet narrowly won the aggregate after having 5 winners. But Bowring’s away 6 will have a good advantage going into the game, and have a good chance of winning the trophy with all the signings they have made. The last tie is between Castlefields and Hadley USC. Hadley enjoyed a good record against Castlefields last season, and captain Rob Burroughs “hopes this will help us achieve our first ever win in the competition. We played well home and away against them last season but this year is a different story with them having improved and hungry for silverware so will be a tough game for us. But no one expects us to beat them so it’s a free game with no pressure for us, just go out and send some bowls and see what happens!”

A reminder that dress code applies and that results need to be entered online by the home club within 24 hours of the tie.
