In the Flowfit Shropshire Premier Bowling League Ifton beat St Georges 9-5, a result which takes them three clear at the top of the table. But the visitors will be the happier of the two after picking up 5 winners, 3 of them 19. Best winner for the visitors was Mike Wainwright 16 while Nige Evans got MVP for being one of those 19 winners. For the home side Leighton Roberts and Craig Griffiths both were best winners 21-9 but Dave ‘Rocky’ Jones got MVP for winning 11. Ifton will be glad they won a couple of the close games, Nick Hughes winning 20 and Darren Lacey 18.
So Ifton go 3 clear of Meole Brace at the top, while St Georges are 5th, a point behind Bowring and Sir John Bayley.
Meole Brace ended their Newport hoodoo after beating them tonight by 17 chalks in the 1st round of the Black Tech Ltd Alan Mayhew Trophy. They won by 14 at home with 4 winners and won by 3 away with 3 winners. They enjoyed a great start at Newport after Colin Beaman won 6 and with fellow county player Darren Wellings winning 18 they enjoyed a 16 shot lead there despite Alan Davidson coming back well to win 19. At Meole they led by 6 with Dave Redge winning 12 and Ade Rowe 19, Russ Millward winning 16 for the visitors. Into the back 3 and despite Sam Millward winning 13 and Phil Emery 14 for Newport at home, Doug Edwards won 18 for Meole to give them a 3 chalk win there. At home Meole had two more winners, Julian Cooke the best winning 12 meaning a win of 14 and 17 overall.
In the only 2nd round game of the night Chester Road beat Wem USC by 3 overall. It was a tale of two big home wins, Wem winning by 27 at home and Chester Road by 30. The main difference was that Chester Road had two winners on Wem, Ian McDonald 19 and Paul Latham 20, while Wem only had one 19 winner on Chester Road. Winning captain Paul Fowles was “happy with the win as they pushed all the way. Two good comebacks at home with Paul Williams 17-11 down and winning 20 while Chris Nicholson was 15-6 down and won 19. The two winners away made the difference too. The win keeps our good form going.” Best winner at home for both teams was Chris Brettell 9 at Wem
Meole now meet Burway in the 2nd round with the winners taking on Chester Road for a place in the final. In the other quarter finals St Georges take on Castlefields while Bowring play Ifton.
