Burway and Chester Road spring shocks, Hanwood score super seven

It was a night to be away in week 11 of the Flowfit Shropshire Premier Bowling League with the rain helping the away teams secure some shock wins and good results with 10-4 the biggest home win of the night! Chester Road sprung the biggest shock, winning 8-6 at Sir John Bayley. It was a remarkable result considering they were 5-1 down but captain Paul Fowles says “we were in the game right from the start even at 5-1 down as we were playing well. After that the game turned around with some excellent bowling from our lads with Andy Moss pure class for us. Spencer Clarke was the same for them and Gary Beff and Paul Latham held their nerves well at the end.” Best winner was Alex Jones 11 for the home side with Spencer Clarke earning MVP for his 12 win, with Andy Moss best winner and MVP for the away side winning to 4. Burway also produced an away win winning 8-6 at struggling Hadley USC. They had to come from behind after James Duce won 10 to be best winner and MVP for the home side before Wayne Rogers had the best win of the night for the visitors, also 10. It was up to Jolyon Partridge to seal the win last on winning 16 to earn himself MVP after playing some superb stuff early on to and from the crown.

Newport also won 8-6 away at Bylet by just 8 chalks which pleased captain Mark Selley after a great team performance. Chris Grocott led the way winning 6 to be best winner and MVP for them with Scott Harries winning 11 to be best winner against his former club with Rob Steventon gaining MVP for his 12 win. Hanwood gained a super 7 at Wrockwardine Wood but failed to win the aggregate. Joint captain Mark Shore gave his account of the game. “Friday was a night to be away as the downpour that happened at Wrockwardine Wood at 5 o’clock certainly took the tricks out of the green. That said Wrockwardine Wood flew out of the blocks and after 10 mins our lads had only scored 2 chalks between all four of them. Stuart Rutter played superb against Wayne Philips and gave very little room and was a much deserved MVP and best winner for winning 4. But Glyn Wellings recovered from 9-0 down and provided a battling display to snatch a 21-20 victory over club stalwart Phil Clee and Tony Hotchkiss also rallied to eventually beat Martin Gaut 18, Martin having denied Tony with some good running bowls towards the end of the game. After 4 we were delighted to have a 2-2 score line after the first 10 mins. In the middle Wrockwardine’s Steve “termite” Roberts played very well to see off Dave Burton but Ash Wellings lead from the front to play exceptionally well to beat former Wrockite captain Rob Jones to earn MVP for his 14 win. David Payne was given his premier league debut after fine displays in our Tanners team and it was a special night for him playing at his Grandad Norman Stones’ club and being watched by him. He put in a great performance to beat Mark Picknell. In the other game which was my pick of the night Mark Jones and Ben Talbot put on an excellent show with Marks lead being just to big for Ben to close but both played very well. In the back Mark Shore used all of his green knowledge and his improving form to lead very well to beat Mark Clayton 11 and be best winner. Nick Davies dug in and ran out from 19-15 to beat Rob Fuller. Wrockites’ Martin Williams bowled very well long to beat Phil Lyttle 5. Last on was Dan Wornell who played very well against Tom Langford but the Wrockites thought he had “exploded” when he sent the jack off when on 20 but 2 ends later with Tom counting Danny played a runner and the end exploded leaving Danny game on with 12 yard bowl. A great battling away performance from the lads and a real selection dilemma for next week away to Wem USC but these are the best problems to have.”

The two biggest home wins came from St Georges and Ifton who won 10-4 against Wem USC and Bowring respectively. Up on the top green at St Georges Andy Morgan led the way with his MVP win of 10, matched by Dave King and Tony Rhodes to share the coppers. For the visitors Colin Smith was the best winner 15 and Neil Boxall gained MVP for his 16 win. Over in St Martins Bowring had two single figure winners in Andy Jones 5 and Jamie King, but it was the former who gained MVP. For the home side it was the two Dave Jones’ who led the way, Rocky winning 3 to be best winner and captain Dickie getting MVP for his 12 win. Meole Brace were also home winners but will be ruing letting it slip again like last Wednesday as they had three losers in the back four. Julian Cooke was best winner 5 and Colin Beaman got MVP for his 8 win for the home side with Andy Judson best winner for the visitors 7 but Mike Beer got MVP for his 14 win.

At the top St Georges lead by 6 to Meole Brace with Ifton and Bowring a further two behind. At the bottom Hadley are 4 behind Wrockwardine Wood. Aaron King lost his 100% record which has allowed Colin Beaman to go top ahead of 4 other players on 10 wins. Stuart Rutter won another MVP to move onto 6 with James Duce and Colin Smith the closest behind on 4.
