Over half the tickets to the finals of the Meole Brace Open were taken by Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier League bowlers last weekend. Former winner Callum Wraight from Castlefields was among three Fields players to qualify after he eased through after edging out Bill Kinchin 18 first game, beating Craig Taylor 7 and Craig Dugdale 11. Elliott McGuinness beat his team mate Mark Taylor 12 in the qualifier, after getting past Dave Lloyd of Bowring 12 and Keith Hatzer 13 beforehand. Steve Freer has signed for Castlefields this season and he beat three Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League players to qualify. First up was Kevin Nicholas of Ifton 16, team mate Mike Beer 18 and then Pete Grimston of St Georges 15. Two Hanwood bowlers got through with Phil Lyttle from Hanwood perhaps the most surprising after he got past Keith Williamson 17, Pete Illidge 13 and Paul Baller 18, while Greg was perhaps the most obvious to get through after easing past Lewis Belcher 4, Craig Davies 13 and Nick Hughes, who plays for Ifton, 3. Two Sir John Bayley bowlers were the last qualifiers of the weekend after Paul Evans got past Burway’s Chris Dovey 6, Geoff Boulton 14 and Nordley team mate Dan Bodley 18, while Chris Ward defeated Kevin Dovey of Burway 10, Steve Bodley 15 and Stuart Clee of Wrockwardine Wood 7.
Current BCGBA Junior Individual Merit Winner and Hanmer player Andy Armstrong qualified after beating 2015 League Averages Winner Rob Burroughs 17, Paul Mackie 18 and Kevin Hocknull 17. Martin Jones, who plays for Ifton, beat Wrockwardine Wood’s Martin Gaut 11, February’s Severnside Competition Winner Nathan Dawes 9 and Sir John Bayley captain Tom Roden, 18. Tony Rhodes and Keiron Roberts were losing qualifiers which could have made it even better for our league bowlers.
