Report of 2017 Season

Firstly thanks to all of our clubs’ representatives for being prompt with entering results for both the league and cup fixtures in 2017. Also, thanks for all timely responses and assistance with all that is involved in keeping the league running sufficiently smoothly.

Many thanks to all our sponsors supporting the league. SALOP LEISURE who were the main sponsors this season and I hope we can maintain their support for the upcoming season. Barlows Fire & Security (Alan Mayhew Trophy), Blair Heating & Plumbing (Pool A/B Trophies), JB Valeting and Detailing (Mike Hinton Pairs), Mousepoint Design (Fantasy Bowls League) and White Apple Photography (Predictions League).

Congratulations to CASTLEFIELDS, who despite a 2 points deduction, won the 2017 Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League!!! Only 5 points ahead of Sir John Bayley. This was the ninth SPBL title for Castlefields and I am sure that they will be targeting ‘La Decima’ in 2018. The criteria for the Pool A/B changed to the top 7 in Pool A and the bottom 7 in Pool B in 2017. Third to seventh in the table, going into Pool A, were Newport, St Georges, Bowring, Hanwood and Meole Brace; the rest went into Pool B. The Most Improved Team was won by Bylet, they finished 28 points better off than their 2016 campaign and helped them stay away from the foot of the table.

At the foot were Wem USC who were 24 points away from safety and headed into the much feared Play Off… The 2017 Play Offs saw three teams apply, Hadley USC (Mid Shropshire), Ludlow (Tanners) & Bridgewater (Market Drayton). Hadley USC defeated Ludlow Castle by 3 shots in the first match at Bridgewater. Then Bridgewater beat Ludlow Castle by 11 shots at Sir John Bayley. This meant that the final match between Hadley USC and Bridgewater at Battlefield was a winner takes all scenario with the Play Off’ Final against Wem USC being the prize for the victor. Hadley USC comfortably swept Bridgewater aside on the night, defeating them by a comfortable 34 shots. Wem USC v Hadley USC was the final line up and Meole Brace was the place to be! After a strong start, including a 21-8 win for Man Of The Match, Mike Dulson, Wem USC never really looked in danger as they ended up winning by 24 shots and maintained their place in the league. It is fantastic that so much interest is shown from clubs in the other leagues in the county and that so many people who play in Shropshire want to play in our league.

The Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy was filled by the 14 member clubs as well as Hadley USC and Donnington Wood who were both invited having been involved in the 2016 Play Offs. Unfortunately, Donnington Wood withdrew from the first round. At the end of the competition it was a tussle between rivals Hanwood and Meole Brace, with the Meole men looking to retain the trophy. With a tight game being anticipated, what really occurred was quite the opposite, Hanwood smashed their opposition by 55 shots including two single figure winners for Dave Burton and Mark Shore (Mike Hinton Man Of The Match). This was their first trophy in the SPBL.

The Blair Heating & Plumbing Premiership Trophies were played at the end of the season and the Finals followed by the League’s Presentation Evening were held at Wrockwardine Wood. The Pool A Final on Fantasy Island, I mean the New Green, was won comprehensively by Sir John Bayley, beating St Georges by 60 shots. The Pool B Final was on the Old Green and this saw a big 47 shot victory for Burway over Ifton.

Individual awards now, and the Individual Merit went to Tom Roden (Sir John Bayley) defeating Wayne Rogers (Burway) in the final at Craven Arms. Tom was in fantastic form all day winning 3 of his 4 games to single figures. The League Averages and Most Consecutive wins went to Peter Farmer (Newport) who won 14 consecutive matches, a total of 22 wins and an aggregate of +145. The JB Valeting and Detailing Pairs competitions was held at Maddocks and was won by Stuart Rutter & Dan Taylor (Wrockwardine Wood) who came out on top of the 12 entrants by defeating Rob Fuller & Chris Worthington (Bylet/Sir John Bayley) 21-13 in the final.
