Week 12 Review

Meole stun Highley, Hanmer shock Newport, Chester Road show spirit 

Meole Brace stunned Highley as they won 12-4 there in week 12 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. It was an incredible win given that most of the team hadn’t seen it before. Captain Andy Wigginton commented on an “incredible win for us because we went there not knowing what to expect as only a couple of our lads had ever played it. Obviously conditions helped the away side but to be 3-1 up off front with both Tarells and Dave Redge fantastic. Two more winners in middle with even the captain putting in a display. Always confident of seeing it through with our back four and 3 close winners gave us a resounding victory and climbed a few places up table away from danger zone.” Best winner for the away side was Will Tarrell 4 with Paul Busby best for the home side 11. Hanmer upset the odds too as they beat Newport for the first time in the league. Skipper Dave Ellison said “the first 4 was shared 2-2 with all the games going to the front runners. The middle 4 saw us gain a 5-3 lead but most importantly a 20 advantage on the agg with Robin Bennett (best winner 7) and Simon Tyler being particularly impressive. The back 4 was shared with a couple of close games going either way but the agg was always in our hands.” Newport’s best winner was was captain Sam Millward 8. Sir John Bayley closed the gap on the leaders with an excellent 11-3 win over St Georges, and overtook their opponents at the same time. Tom Roden was their best winner 8, with Lewis Scott best for the away side 6.

Chester Road showed plenty of fighting spirit as they got 6 winners at Wem USC. Skipper Paul Fowles is “very happy with the result, we pushed them all the way. We are missing good players every week so happy we are playing a bit better.” Mark Holland was their best winner 15, with Ian Metcalfe best winner for the home side 5. But they are now bottom after Ifton won 10-4 against Wrockwardine Wood. Nicky Jones was best winner 5 with Dan Taylor’s 8 win best for the Wrockites. Burway will be happy with their 4 at Hanwood, with Duncan Pressley best winner 11. Hanwood though were without some regulars so will be happy themselves, as Ash Wellings was best winner 6. The Bylet and Castlefields game was postponed because of no access to the green.

Newport are seven clear at the top to Sir John Bayley, who have a game in hand. Chester Road are a point behind Ifton at the bottom. Dave East still leads the League Averages, and has joined Keith Wall on 9 Consecutive Wins.
