Dragons win away, Bayley & Fields win big
St Georges were the only away winners in week 5 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League despite all the rain. They won 11-5 at Highley with skipper Tony Rhodes being “really pleased with the result in the conditions and as disappointing as the Castlefields result was just losing the aggregate it keeps us rolling forward.” Pete Farmer was best winner for them 4 while Dave Scriven was for the home side 1. Sir John Bayley and Castlefields both won 13-1 at home to Hanmer and Hanwood respectively. Bayley captain Chris Worthington admitted “as soon as the rain hit I was expecting the worst, but after a difficult start to the season we soon settled into a very heavy green, we were in control from the off with Alex Jones his usual brilliant self, great stuff from Owen Evans getting what will be his first of many wins for the Bayley and Kane Beaman carrying on his impressive form. We clicked as a team, players who were on it did the business with the big cards, and players, who maybe the conditions weren’t for them, battled well to get the win. Confidence is high.” Best winner was Gordon Hawkins 3, with Hanmer’s winner being Mike Gilpin 14. Castlefields are also in great form building on their away win at St Georges last week. Joint captain Adam Jones said “Friday’s result was very pleasing against a good side in Hanwood who I expect to be up there. Good atmosphere with the Hanwood lads some good games on a green that wasn’t easy to play. We are very happy with our start to the season and hope that we can continue to get positive results, we are however realistic with our aims for this year. We continue to build for the longer term.” Rich Goddard was best winner 8, with Darren Wellings the only winner for Hanwood 20.
Wrockwardine Wood continued their impressive early season form with a 12-2 win over Ifton. Stand in skipper Rob Jones said it was a “good solid performance and result from the team. Last few weeks we’ve gotten most of the close games over the line and this was key again this week.” Josh Cotton was best winner 5, with Sam Williams best for the away side 14. Chester Road and Meole Brace both had 11-3 wins over Bylet, Burway and Newport respectively. Chester Road had Ian McDonald as their best 21-7 and captain Scott Harries was best for the visitors with his 12 win. Meole had Doug Edwards as their best winner 3, with Wayne Rogers best for the Ludlow side 18. Wem USC defeated Newport 10-4 with Alex Hassall their best winner 4, while Reece Farr was the best for the visitors by the same score.
Wrockwardine lead by 6 points at the top, with Bylet now at the bottom by a point to their neighbours Highley. April’s Player of the Month Jamie King still leads the League Averages ahead of 6 others who also have a perfect record so far.
