The year 2004 provided league newcomers, Newport with the first taste of Premier League bowls, a “back to back” Championship success for Chester Road and the first ever “Relegation” play-off match.

The season started with Chester Road once again strong favourites for major honours as they became BCGBA Team Champions for the first time after beating Woodfield by 34 shots in the final at Warrington in April. They opened their league campaign with a resounding 13-1 win against Donnington Wood and came close to winning at St Georges the following week, but lost 9-5.  After six games they led St Georges by 4 points at the top of the table and whilst they lost 8 away matches during the season, their home form was most impressive with several big wins recorded.  Having won the league with 234 points the year before, they managed 245 in 2004. St Georges made a valiant attempt to match the “champions” and the season may have run a different course after the clash of the top “two” in July, where in a match of three 21-20 losers and with the match all square after 11 games, they lost 10-4.  They finished 12 points behind with Castlefields a further 14 points away in third. The league’s most improved team in 2004 was Terry Williams’ Ifton who finished in fifth position just behind Meole Brace.  Wrockwardine Wood were level with Ifton on 199 points but finished in 6^th position.

The Alan Mayhew Trophy went to St Georges for the second time with a 235-205 victory over Chester Road in the final played at Severnside.  Craig Barker won the “Mike Hinton Man of the Match” award and was presented with an engraved tankard after the match by the League President. The Premiership Play-Off’s format continued as an 8 a side competition and Chester Road continued their impressive form when they beat Meole Brace in the final of the Pool A shield.  Ford collected their first ever Premier League Trophy when they lifted the Pool B shield after defeating Donnington Wood in the final at Bridgewater. On the individual front, Martin Lloyd lifted the Premier League Merit for the first time, beating St Georges captain Mick Jones 21-18 in the final to take the trophy and £160 first prize at Bylet Bowling Club.  The first ever Mike Hinton Pairs were held at Meole Brace, and it was John Coxill and Pete Griffiths (Craven Arms) who won it, coming out on top of 26 entries. For the first time in 2004, two £100 prizes were given to the League Averages winner and the player with the Most Consecutive Wins.  Andrew Moss won 21 games to lift the Neville Edwards Trophy and Castlefields captain Rich Goddard won 14 consecutive games to take the other individual award.

Lastly, but not least, the season finished with a series of play-off matches.  As mentioned above, the bottom of the table was very close in 2004 and whilst Childs Ercall and Craven Arms managed to avoid the dreaded 14^th position, both Archibald Worthington and league newcomers Newport finished there on 131 points. In accordance with a recently revised league rule, a “Relegation” play-off match was required for the first time in the league’s history.  Newport led from the start and whilst Archibald threatened with a late revival, they lost and had to play the winners of the Rhos (Oswestry League winners) and Bylet (Mid Shropshire League winners) match. This was held at Ford  and in a close game, Rhos eventually won by 10 shots.  The play-off decider was to take place at Meole Brace and, in front of another large crowd, Archibald Worthington defeated Rhos by 13 chalks, with three 21-11 winners being vital.
