The year 2005 saw the resignation of original founder members Craven Arms just 5 matches into the season as the continuing loss of players eventually took its toll. Despite some of their players continuing to play in our league having joined new clubs, it was an especially sad day for their club captain Tony Cowdale.  Interest in joining our league continues to be high with three teams again applying to take their place at the end of the season, so we will start 2006 with our full compliment of 14 teams

The season started with Chester Road once again strong favourites for major honours and St Georges hoping the signing of county star Peter Farmer would provide their missing link. Chester Road opened their league campaign with an 11-3 away win at Wem USC but after six games it was St Georges who led by 16 points at the top of the table after a perfect 6 wins out of six start.  Match seven on the 20^th May proved to be decisive with Chester Road traveling to St Georges and inflicting their first home defeat on their title rivals with a 9-5 win. After 10 matches Chester Road moved to the top of the league and remained unbeaten for three months with a 14 match winning win which ended at Wrockwardine Wood with an 8-6 defeat. Chester Road wrapped up their third successive title with a match to spare and finished 14 points clear of St Georges, who were runners up for the second season running.  Castlefields finished third and Wrockwardine Wood achieved their highest ever position of 4^th.  The league’s most improved team in 2005 was Newport who finished in ninth position having been involved in the relegation playoff last season.

The Alan Mayhew Trophy went to St Georges for the third time with a 235-179 victory over Donnington Wood in the final played at the Bowring.  The former Bowring player, Andrew Jones, was the recipient of the “Mike Hinton Man of the Match” award following his 21-5 win in the first four. On the individual front, the Mike Hinton Pairs was held for the second year and was won by the by the Wrockwardine Wood pairing of Dale Downes and Rob Jones as 33 pairs from 10 clubs took part. After over 9 hours bowling, they overcame the Newport pairing of Daniel Hand and Chris Grocott 21-19.  Alan Davidson, Newport, won the John Coxill Trophy for the first time when he beat Tony Rhodes, St Georges, 21-12 in the final held at Sir John Bayley.  Dave “Rocky” Jones won 21 games to lift the Neville Edwards Trophy and Chester Road’s Charlie Weaver’s 14 consecutive wins meant he took the other individual award.

The Premiership Play-Off’s format continued as an 8 a side competition and Castlefields beat St Georges in the final of the Pool A shield, with  Ifton lifting the Pool B shield after defeating Wem USC in the final at Wem Sports.

Last, but not least, the season finished with a play-off match.  Following the resignation of Craven Arms, there was no relegation play-off but an one off match with the victors talking the 14^th place in the Premier League.  The fact that there would be only one play off match was not known until the playoff night itself due to the dispute over who had won the Mid Shropshire League. Had St Georges had points deducted, the runners up, Hadley USC, would have been eligible to take part in the play offs.  However I was advised during the night of the match that St Georges were confirmed as league winners, resigning Hadley to another year out of the league. The play-off decider took place at Ford and, in front of another large crowd, the Highley League winners, White Horse, defeated the Whitchurch and Malpas League winners, Bridgewater by 28 chalks, with nine winners.
