The final of the 2024 Audlem Specal Events Team Alan Mayhew Trophy Final takes place later tonight on the grass green at Allscott Heath at 6.30 p.m. between the top two teams from last season, Castlefields and Sir John Bayley.
It is a repeat of the last two finals in 2022 and 2023, when Castlefields won by 18 and then the Bayley reversed that when winning by 42 last season. Both teams have put out a quality line up, with new signings entering the team as well as some players who were unavailable in the 2023 final.
It kicks off with a tasty encounter between Jon Palmer and Paul Evans, with another one seeing Mike Beer playing Aaron Tapper. Two form players meet as Hayden Lewis takes on Scott Harries in the first four, with Adam Jones in a rare first four appearance and plays Ayden Smith, who had a successful first year back with the Bayley last season. At number 5 Tom Palmer plays Scott Simpson once again in a repeat of the number one game from last year, a game that Scott won 9. Gary Neal plays recent Owley Wood Open winner Reece Farr, while Rich Goddard takes on Stuart Rutter in a clash of big competition winners. Wayne Rogers and Spencer Clarke have plenty of experience together, and both played each other in the KGJ Insurance County Cup Final, a game which earned Spencer the player of the match award. Josh Hale won the “Mark Burroughs” player of the match award for the Bayley, but has made the switch over to the Fields and comes up against Owen Evans at number 9. New Fields signing Ash Wellings won this with Hanwood in 2017 and plays quadruple winning Bayley captain Dave Lloyd at number 10. Callum Wraight missed last year’s match, along with Mike Beer and Rich Goddard, and comes up against one of the three new Bayley signings in Dan Taylor. Vice-captain Tom Roden hopes to bring home this trophy like he did in the Pool A last month, and plays Andrew Judson, who has had a good start to the season.
Castlefields captain Steve Peach says “again we face Sir John Bayley in yet another major league final. We will relish the test that SJB provide and as will always be the case with any Castlefields side the aim is always to win. The quality of both sides on paper is fantastic and a fantastic advert for the SPBL.”
