The second running of the Edgmond Open sees a quality field assembled looking to win the Walter Owen Trophy in what looks like to be a perfect day of weather!
The inaugural winner Greg Smith starts as favourite again to retain his trophy, and has Gareth Davies first round who will look to cause a monumental upset. Callum Wraight lost to Greg in last year’s Semi Final but is in the opposite half of the draw this time. He has Jackie Rutter first game, the only woman to have qualified in this competition so far. If Jackie does pull out an almighty shock, she could face her husband Stuart next round, he plays Jack Desmond first game. Jack qualified last year but played Greg first game! Gareth Herbert is third favourite but has a very tough opener in Reece Farr, who reached the Semi Finals of this last year. Lee Brown has qualified for the first time and plays the up and coming Castlefields player Rhys Marshall first round. Jamie King and Joe Dicken is a game that can’t be split by the bookie, both players having been playing a lot over the Winter. Scott Simpson has won competitions down the road at Wrockwardine Wood and has Sir John Bayley team mate Chris Worthington first up, while Elliot McGuiness won the Wrockwardine Wood Open last season, and has a Wrockwardine player first up in Josh Cotton, who has impressed in qualifying for three pre season competitions. Martin Gaut and Sam Millward are regulars on the competition circuit but are looking for their first big open win. Martin plays his Tuesday night Hanmer captain Matt Beeston while Sam has a tough opener against Adam Penlington, with both having won competitions in Wales before. Martin Simcock reached the Quarter Finals here last season but has a tough starter against former Junior All England winner Andy Armstrong first. Steve Pratt against Dan Petcher pitches two Midland Masters winners together, while just above them sees Mark Parsons and John Phillips clash, two players who can make a name for themselves in this. This is the same at the top of the draw where Mark Orme meets Shaun Swinton, both players having only recently started playing in these competitions. Dan Williams is another who plays in plenty of competitions, and so does his opponent first round in Rikki Higgs, both looking for their first big win!
