Hanwood shock Wrockites, Wem earn vital win, Bayley break record
Hanwood shocked Wrockwardine Wood in week 9 of the Taylor Support Shropshire Premier Bowling League. After losing at home to Bylet the week before, they inflicted a rare home defeat on Wrockwardine after having lost just one of their opening 8 games. Captain Simon Lane says “following our previous week’s disappointing home result we wanted a positive response in our game against Wrockwardine Wood. That was going to be no easy task on a green that we haven’t got more than 2 games on in the last few seasons. But we got off to a great start getting 2 off the front and we managed to keep the level high throughout the night giving us a very unexpected win.” Simon himself was best winner 8 with Josh Cotton best for the home side 7. Bylet themselves continued their good form with a 11-3 win over Horsehay. Skipper Cheryl Caswell admits “to be fair to Horsehay we pinched two 20 cards that we looked like losing but please with how we battled throughout as a team throughout the game and that we got a much needed result.” Best winner for Bylet was Tim Ealey 12, with Gavin Bridge best for Horsehay 7. Wem earned a vital win at the bottom of the table with a 10-4 win over Hanmer. Captain Andy Marshall says “it was a very pleasing home victory (our first of the season) with both James Dowley and Simon Lewis getting their first wins of the season along with George Williams returning to the team. The man of the match had to be Carl Pawlowski who won 21-20 after being 16-2 down on the back. It has given the whole team a lift for the next few games.” Best winners were Simon Lewis and Sarah Weaver 21-7, with Hanmer’s being Mel Jenkins 9.
Sir John Bayley created a new league record of 15 straight league wins after beating Adderley 12-2. Best winner was Scott Harries 1, with Gary Whitehall best winner 10 for Adders. Castlefields moved into 2nd place with a 10-4 victory over Ifton, led by Callum Wraight 21-5. For the away side it was Joe Langford best winner 11. Burway overtook Ifton into 4th place after defeating St Georges 11-3. Best winner was Russell Davies 7 and Matt Rhodes best for the Dragons 11. Highley beat Meole Brace 9-5, with Danny Staham best winner for them 8 and Chris Jones best for Meole 9.
Sir John Bayley lead Castlefields by 7, with Wrockwardine Wood another 3 behind. Horsehay are 10 behind Wem USC, who are now just a point behind Hanmer. There are 4 players on 9 wins, Owen Jackson and Jon Palmer leading them on aggregate.
