Week 14 Report

Champions go top, Castlefields crush Chester Road, Wem win away

There was a change at the top of the Flowfit Shropshire Premier League but not at the bottom in week 14. The Champions Newport moved top of the league for the first time this season with a 10-4 win away at Bylet, but only by a single point as Meole Brace won 8-6 at Bowring. Peter Grimston was best winner for Newport as they made it 5 successive away wins in Bridgnorth. Kevin Keary was their MVP winning 13 whilst best for the home side was Rob Steventon 10 with Jason Groom winning MVP for winning 20. Over at Bowring Meole Brace were grateful of two single figure wins, Will Tarrell 7 and Colin Beaman 8, as well as Mark Thomas winning 11 for MVP to win the aggregate by 10. For the home side new Merit Champion Rob Roden was best winner winning 8 with George Williams winning MVP for winning 12.

Archibald Worthington missed a chance to climb off the bottom of the table when they lost 10-4 at home to Wem USC. Wem won comfortably with 3 single figure winners, Stuart Bailey 2, John Bushill 5, also MVP, and Chris Brettell 7. The two Rob’s starred for Archie, Adams winning 7 and Brassington 10 for MVP. The other Whitchurch side had a poor result too, but the scoreline did not reflect the 13-1 result at Castlefields, even admitted by home captain Keith Walton. “They were unlucky to have only one winner as all there first five players played extremely well for nothing as they all dipped out. Luke Jones was fantastic at the death against Andy Moss, so was Clay Flattley against KP Jones and Rich Goddard and Glyn Herbert both played well to scrape a win. It was a great team performance tonight so we are extremely pleased and hopefully will be the start of a great run at an important stage of the season.” Chester Road’s winner was Gary Beff 7 but KP Jones took MVP for getting 20 off Clay, one of three 20 losers for the visitors. Andy Duckett was best winner winning 10 and Dave Peach won MVP for winning 15.

Burway moved up to 3rd as they beat Ifton 11-3 to continue their run of great home form. Roy Crowther won 5 to best winner and MVP for the home side while Richard Zolman won 4 for the away side to earn MVP. Sir John Bayley moved above Ifton to be level on points with 4th placed St Georges  by beating Wrockwardine Wood 9-5. However the visitors will probably be the most pleased with their 5 led by best winner Phil Clee 12 and MVP winner Steve Roberts 18. MVP for the Bayley was Gordon Hawkins 13 and best winner Alex Jones 6.

So Newport are a point ahead of Meole at the top of the table, and with a game in hand away at the Bayley this Wednesday. Burway move into 3rd but teams below them do have a game in hand. It’s the same at the bottom with both teams scoring 4 points.

Rich Lawson won again to be 13 out of 13, with Pete Farmer just behind on 12 wins with Nicky Jones. There’s no change at the top of the MVP table with Rob Burroughs on 5.
